Bureaucracy at its best!

Gee

Gee Report 4 Aug 2011 18:21

My mate has flown to NY today with her daughter. When they got to the aiport this morning, they were told the flight was over booked and there wasnt a seat for them!

But, there was a flight later (30 mins later) and would they mind going on that?

So Deb said, this is not good enough (in the hope they would get first class as compo) and the airline said.....OK, we will compo you £2K!!!

All in all, they ended up with free flights and will save the money to go again next year

So glad it's all worked out okay ja...x. all that worry for nothing. What a waste of money on their part too!

Gee

Gee Report 4 Aug 2011 18:38

I know Dea....fantastic or what. I cant remember the the airline but I know it was a US one

Ive flown with US airline Continental to NY before and they are 'pants' and so are most of the staff....in fact it was the staff that were pants all except for one member of the cabin crew

Are they 'wheelie bins' Cynths?

Do you have all them 'silly rules' in your area about not being able to wash out your wheelie bins into the drains etc??

They say you have to have them 'specialist' cleaned and there are vans which come round and 'do the job', (for a large fee), taking the dirty water away with them !!

Gawd knows which 'drain' they dump that into ??? ;-)

Yet another 'rip-off' !

We have our bins cleaned by 'Wheely Clean' who come once a month. It's only about £30 a year

I aint washing out any bins...no sireee

jax Report 4 Aug 2011 19:02

We dont have wheelie bins here only this silly food waste bin.

I have used a few US airlines Pan Am was best just after Lockerbie we got freebies from them and they upgraded us to 1st class only one way though all the rest on that trip were stand by, so never knew if we were going to get on the flight or not until the last minute.

Gins

that was a good deal for your friend, but not surprising if it was an American airline.

They always give compensation for overbooking and delays!

Continental is the pits. Does not have a good reputation

Actually, many of the US companies do not have very good reputaitons, for one reason or another ...... we usually try to avoid them whenever possible. United is the one that we usually do seem to fly with 'cos they serve the cities in the US we want to go to.

and you now ahve the added problem that the US Congress and Senate have gorn off on vacation without passing an emergency bill that would pay FAA people

so they are now expecting FAA inspectors, ground control, etc to work without pay.

They'll have to reconvene at some point

You would think so.....

Back to bins....

Yes Dea, wheely bins they are. No rules that I know of. Hot water, disinfectant and an old mop - easy. I hate smelly bins....and make sure mine never reach that stage. Everything is bagged and the plastics/tins, rinsed out.

I can spend that £30 on summat else thanks! :-D

Dea

Dea Report 4 Aug 2011 20:58

Well, 'them's the rules' around here Cynths!!

Not that I stick to them though - like you, I don't like to have 'smelly' bins in my garden !!

And Cyns my dear...that time washing your bins, can be spent on better things...like watching footy or having fun in some other way!

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 4 Aug 2011 21:19

Once on a trip to San Diego via St Louis during the late1980's we actually boarded a TWA flight from Gatwick but found people already occupying the seats we had been allocated. They had the same seat numbers on their boarding passes as we had. We got off the plane and went back to the desk and were allocated different seats. Got back on board and once again found people sitting in our newly allocated seats. Once again the boarding passes were checked and they had the same seat numbers as we had on their boarding passes.

The planes crew contacted the TWA manager and he came aboard to try to sort things out. He used the planes tannoy to call for 3 volunteers to give up their seats but nobody came forward so at the end of the day we had to get off. To compensate us for their cock up TWA arranged overnight accommodation for us at the Gatwick Hilton including completely free use of the restaurant and bar. They also gave each of us £500 compensation.

The downside of course was that although we did not travel on the day we were supposed to our luggage did. Being unsure whether our luggage would be waiting for us in St Louis or San Diego meant that most of our 2 hour stopover in SL was spent franticly trying to find our bags which unknown to us and TWA had made their own way to San Diego unaccompanied.

That trip was my 2nd to the US. On our first trip to the States (Via Pan Am) we had arrived in Boston but our luggage didn't make it. As you can imagine our 3rd trip was viewed with some trepidation wondering whether us and our bags would arrive together or whether neither of us would make it.

Having used most airlines to travel to the US my vote for for the best all round would probably be for American Airlines with whom I have travelled several times and have never had any problems.

I'll remember that Jonesey....we might scoot to NY or other in Oct when I finish at college

JB fancies San Fran.....not me :(

jax

jax Report 4 Aug 2011 21:34

Its cheaper not having a bin at all bags for us delivered FREE.

That was the trouble we had jonesey being on standby, luggage went even if we did'nt...which I thought rather stupid a few months after Lockerbie...thats the Americans for yer :-) at least this end we were put in 1st class to make sure we got on

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 4 Aug 2011 21:41

Gin,

San Fran is a wonderful city. Let JB have his way on that one, you won't regret it.

Take a city tour from one of the minibus operators on Fishermans Wharf to get the layout then make your own way back to see what sights you fancied exploring more. Hire a car and drive along Big Sur taking in Carmel and San Simeon.
