Now it is raining .. although that may well turn to freezing rain and even more snow as the temperature drops again.

Hi Everyone

A bit of a busy weekend had by all.

Our lovely boys who rent the house next door had a party that started on Thursday night and finished at 3.30 Sat morning after I finally called the police ...we have had enough of them .

I have just got back from the Police station this morning to make a full report of what is going on there.
Hopefully they will now take over and they are going to watch the house for any other goings on.

We are still getting very hot weather here and it is taking its toll on us I can tell you.
My poor garden is suffering too,they say we have at least another week in the mid 30's and very humid to boot.

While I was in the UK I did watch Coronation St and quite enjoyed it ,now my sister tells me what is happening ,we don't get it in OZ.

Don't know of any Workhouses here but the old Fremantle Gaol is said to be haunted ,not a nice place to be after dark I hear.

Going to put dinner on then I might do a bit of my tree.

Sounds like you had fun Sue - we had one of those the other night .

Loud music all night & turned if off around 5 in the morning & they all went to bed. So a couple of us oldie neighbours decided to get our own back - good job it wasn't a very cold day.

We went to my neighbour who lives nearly next door to the party & we live opposite in the cul de sac. We syncronised CD's & sorted out a playing order - between 9am & 10am (with the windows open) we played 60's & rock music loudly. The moans that came from the house - then all went quiet - we gave then 40 mins to get back to sleep & started again till lunchtime. We even had a round of applause from a few other neighbours. We also had some very doizy teenagers that day who sat around moaning about the music for about an hour.

Gosh it was good fun my OH hasn't had so much fun in ages - we could do a good street party - but no-one wants the bother.

I have only been to Liverpool once & I think I saw the cathedral - really must go back again one day. I wanted to see the Liver building, the Ferry & the Mersey - let alone the Titanic memorial. i did get to see them but it was raining quite heavily - I will go back one day when its drier.

I have been to Liverpool on several occasions - mainly work.
It is one of my favourite Cities and I love the people, really down to earth.
I put Scousers, Glaswegians and Geordies in the same "down to earth" category.

I have family in the Manchester/Cheshire Area and the natives in that area can be quite nice!!

I come from the Manchester area!

Hi Everyone

Anne what a good idea I have never thought of doing that.

At the moment they are all quiet and we are enjoying the peace I can tell you.
When it is hot like this you want to open the house up at night to cool it down so it can cope with the next day of heat.
These boys don't let you open up because they are so noisy,last night we had a good sea breeze and cooled the house down ,so good today .

We do have street parties here as well, might put that one to the neighbours see if they will be in it.

Manchester is my choice to fly into when I come to the UK ,they have a very good Airport and my sister only lives in South Yorkshire so she is my first port of call and she always picks me up from the Airport.

I really miss her this time we had such a good time together..very sad but it was nice to be together to say goodbye to our favorite Aunt.

Hot again today can't wait for winter .

My friend Stuart is visiting Perth in the next 2 weeks - I guess he doesn't need to bring his winter woolies then.

My friend Mike - i sit next to in the office is a Scouser - but lived down south just a long now - so he is a half & half.

I have always lived "Down South" but I did stay in heywood (Nr Manchster )for several summers - i love visiting "Up North" Most people are mega friendly. Us southerners do tend to be a lot more reserved.

Unless you are sitting next to me on a bus (or standing at the bus stop) I tend to talk to anyone about anything - but you speak to me first. i am a very shy little bunnie really.

Actually I think we are all rather shy on this thread - if you look deep down.

Well back to work - i am in training this week as helping out on a new duty for the next 3 weeks while Stuart is in OZ - loads to learn & I need to get it all right for him when he gets back - don't want to let the side down.

Sometimes I just quietly observe the world going by and if you think you are quiet Anne, you should try being me..........

Anyway, we spent the weekend looking for carpet, curtains, duvet covers, wallpaper etc for the bedroom.
We finally decided to go with a beech laminate as it's much cheaper than carpeting and I can fit it myself, saving the cost of a carpet fitter.
It also gives more leeway for colour schemes.

Normally I paper the walls but this time round we have gone with a vinyl paper which can be painted allowing us more flexibility in our future colour schemes instead of stripping walls.

Bought a heather (light purple for those of you not "au fait" with the grouse moors) coloured duvet with matching curtains only to discover that 72" drop wasn't long enough and they don't do 90"....... Aargghhh
We'll just have to decorate around the duvet :))

I took up the offer of Charlie on Records to do a death lookup in Edinburgh and it confirmed my worst fears.

My Yorkshire born best man was a bit of a loner and an orphan who spent all his adult life working in hotels where drink is ever present and marriages have a tendency to break up.
My wife and I are the only couple left from our years in hotels that remain married. All our friends are divorced or separated.

My best man was never married but spent a lot of time drinking and the last I heard at the turn of the millenium was that he had lost his job due those excesses.
I don't know why, but on losing contact with him I looked up deaths on Scotlands People and turned up a death in 2002 of the right age and area.

Charlie confirmed the certificate showing death from chronic alcoholism which really is sad as he never seemed capable of dealing with the fact that he was an orphan.......... it just seemed to eat into him over the years.

Just a shame that he had no family or friends in the far north of Scotland where he had gone to work.

Died age 49,
Diabetes & Chronic Alcohlism.
Listed as Single.
Informent was a local policeman.

A sad end to a life which showed so much promise when we were young men.........................

After reading about Sue and Anne's experiences with neighbours, I am very glad that we have nice, friendly...and quiet ones! The only noise we get is from next door by one where they have three children, but even then, they are hardly ever heard. The noisiest thing is a) the traffic - which we are used to and b) the cockeral from the stables across the field! I'm sure it crows day and night!


I am married to a Scouser and have lived in three areas of Liverpool. We met at the bank we both worked at near the Pier Head.


My daughter would be pleased with your colour scheme Frank. She is very into purpley shades and both her bedroom and bathroom are that colour. I wear heather shade eyeshadow....does that count???


What a shame about your friend and at such a relatively young age. Poor chap.



My new washing machine arrives on Thursday and I know I will be in because the car will be at the garage! Looks like it could be beans on toast for a while until the bank balance recovers....lol

It has been transcribed in the Canterbury Records as WILIAM ACOCK married Mary Page ,just wondering if there is anymore information on that entry.
It does fit perfectly with my line of Haycocks ,it has been my brick wall for about 5yrs.

They had a son Jesse bn 1794 Bapts St Pauls.

It is very hot in Perth at the moment so Anne you friend he will need lots of shorts and tea shirts and plenty of sunscreen as I suspect he is white after your winter and would burn very easy over hear .

Frank I was so sad to hear of your friend, what a terrible age to die.

Did he not have anyone to talk to,maybe AA over there.
Being a male I think they have trouble talking .....mine is an exception you can't shut him up.

My Office was in Water Street, just up from the Pier Head. I even went across the Mersey in the Ferry!!

Oh Frank - How sad

I love purple & am wearing a very dark Heather shade today - a lot of my outfits are heather coloured. I approve of the colour scheme.

Was the laminate very expensive & is it easy to put down? don't you need to sand the floorboards or something.

Cynthia - just for info - Beans on Toast - I wouldn't put it in your new washing machine - you may just find out you need another new one very quickly. I personally would use either the cooker ot microwave & toaster for my Baked beans on Toast.

Seriously - our old washing machine gave up the ghost after 15 years & what a boon the new one is & uses so much less electricity - well worth the money & egg, chips & beans for tea for a few weeks.

My sister in law seems to have a new washing maching every 2 or 3 years - she uses hers at least twice a day (well seems like that) & most of the time she lives on her own. 1 wash for whites, 1 for pink, 1 for dark colours - Oh mauve sheets this week so one for mauve, yellow sheets so another one for that this week etc

And so on and so on

Well back to work - hope the new machine arrives on time

I met a couple of people like when I worked in hotels for the summers back around 1960. It was very sad.


I was in Liverpool when the Beatles were at the Cavern, but before they got famous. We actually preferred the action at the coffee house up the street!!


Major wind storm here ..................... all ferry traffic between the mainland and the Island has been shut down until at least late afternoon. Also heavy rian. The area I live in has been pretty quiet .... some heavy rain, but not much wind. So we've been lucky.

With regard to my best man, we were just thinking that when we all worked at The Gleneagles Hotel it was like being part of a huge family as we all lived in hotel accomodation, a total of over 350 staff.
Female block for the ladies at the back end of the hotel, male block for us guys outside the hotel and even married quarters on the top of the hotel !!

When he took up the position as head waiter in Inverness he had no one with him and no live in accomodation either so that may have been quite a shock to the system......... almost like being orphaned again.

At Gleneagles he was always the life and soul of the party but unfortunately with a drink in his hand.
I do recall at our wedding that his legs were trembling when he started to do the speeches, resulting in his having to give up on the telegrams etc which was quite surprising to anyone who new him.

I knew a lot of alcoholics while working in hotels and bars which isn't surprising given the easy access to drink.
On clearing up from a banquet one night, we "lost" a waiter who was finally found lying amongst the empties having drained most of what was left on the tables.

There but for the grace of God, go I.

As for the laminate flooring Anne, £4.00 sq.m so not expensive as it's just for the bedroom. £80.00 then you have to add the cost of spacers, edging and a wood fiber underlay.
A lot cheaper than carpet and pretty simple to fit.

Just Google "laying laminate flooring"

All you need is a good flat surface to lay your laminate, be it concrete, chipboard or floorboards. No need to sand as a fiber board underlay will even out any irregularities in floorboards as well as soundproofing.
If it's chipboard you will get away with a thinner polyfoam underlay.

After that's down, just take your time and follow the instructions.

I've not done ours yet, as I have to paint and paper first probably at the weekend but it looks pretty simple to do, you'll hear me scream if it's not ;))

There are some very expensive laminate floorings, but it all depends on where it's for.
Kitchen and bathroom are most expensive as they have to be waterproof laminates, the normal stuff just swells with the water and pops up.

On the subject of brickwalls, I suppose we should be glad we have them unlike my best man who had no one...........

Hello Everybody and especially Frank, you have just made me realise how selfish I have been by moaning at not being able to find my roots, compared to your lost friend I dont have a problem, Frank thank you for the lesson.
Things here are much the same as always though I am going to have a treat this weekend, my lovely daughter is coming to the island for the weekend, sadly she is coming to attend a service to celebrate a friends life, he died aged 66 of a heart attack. , nevertheless it will be lovely to see her.
Ron has been signed off from the eye clinic(again) so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Here's a thought for you all.

We are well used to the talking lifts ......... door closing, 1st floor etc but I've always been intrigued by the accents and I do a lot of lifts.

We have English male, very posh English female, normal English female, and Sri Lanka female (I kid you not !) but a new building has just opened with ........... wait for it.......

A Scottish lassie and it's lovely, that just tickles me ;))

I still love watching the early Heartbeat shows - i was too young to enjoy it all at the time - i love the 50's & 60's but want my computer around too - think of all the family who were around then - I could have got loads of info.

Anyone got a time machine anywhere who wants to lend it out for a day or two.

The washing machine saga took a new twist this morning. The men duly delivered it and then informed me that they didn't have the necessary tools to undo it's packaging but they could leave it and arrange to get it fixed at a later date!! Ha Ha Ha. Oh no you don't sunshine. I have paid to have it delivered and installed today and installed it will be. Please sort it out.

I must have scared them to death....lol Next thing is they are loading it off the van and to the back door. Then.......they can't unplug the old one! Okay, let me think.......got it! I sorted that out. Then, having heaved the old one out and brought the new one in, they couldn't plug it in! Oh for goodness sake! I sorted that problem out too!

Our car also had it's MOT and service today and, fortunately, all went well with that.


Also took OH to doctors cos his coughing drives me mad. So quite a full day really - and I thought it was going to be quiet....ah well.
