Thanks for the email Frank - trouble is I couldn't get the disc to run as it won't recognise the DVD - I need to play around with some leads me thinks.

Cynthia - hope the beans are ok - sorry to hear about your daughter - hope her computer feels better soon.

Our little James as you know has aspergers - trouble is now he seems to have got fixated about gangs of boys - who haven't done anything to him or are likely to. He tends to hide if he sees a group of boys near or passing by him. Also just discovered for the last year he has spent every lunch hour either hiding in the library or in the art room as can't face all the boys in the play ground. His mum is trying to get him to see an educational psychciatrist (bad spelling).

GP on at the moment - so trying to type quietly.

Very worried about Evelyn - I know she was off to France - but she hasn't popped in at all.

Reece hope you are keeping well - do pop in & say hello just once - hope things are settling down a bit now - we miss you. Its so hard trying to get back on your feet - everyone walking around on egg shells around you.

Really looking forward to our week away - hopefully i can get the dongle working and pop in one or twice.

Hello, its me, yes really it is.
I have had a very busy time with friends etc.
We are off to France tomorrow for 4 weeks so am busy packing and cleaning , cant possibly leave the house untidy can I?.
The weather here is not very good, quite chilly and more like Autumn than Summer.
Nice to know you all care about me, I care about you all as well.
I have received my parents marriage certificate and now know that mothers father Robert Macleod was a Major in the 1st Seaforth Highlanders, he was deceased on parents cert in 1929, dont know his date of death, so I am no nearer tracing mothers roots.
Must get on with some work now but will pop in again soon, if only for a doughnut, I like ring doughnuts best but would rather have a Lamington.

It's sort of horrible as some of the "fixes" involve delving into the registry which is scary and not for the faint hearted so It's best to try all the obvious or "STUPID" things.
I didn't like it when you were talking about changing cables as it's always easiest to just replace like with like.

Are the plugs all in properly....sound plug, data plug, power plug.

Is the END data plug of the data cable plugged into the ( Master )DVD.......the second data plug on the data cable is for a slave or second DVD/ CD

Is the other end of the data cable securely plugged into the motherboard.

Is the DVD set up as Master by using the cap on the two relevant pins at the rear...........Master / cable select / slave. (MA /CS / SL )
If you only have one DVD it should be set to Master

Once all of the above have been checked , the theory is that rebooting the computer should allow it to find the new hardware then allowing you to install the drivers etc from the CD.

If the worst comes to the worst, you could always ask a local computer shop how much they would charge to install it for you...........even PC World as you bought it from them and they do offer that service............just don't know how much.

Cynthia, the doughnut note was pointing out that ring / sugar doughnuts are more fattening than the cream or jam ones but you probably already know that :))

Cynthia just make sure your ring Donut has been rolled in cinnamon
as half a teaspoon of Cinnamon a day helps to lower your cholesterol level so will cancel out Frank's extra fat.

Had a great time at the Baby shower, cool party games, lots of laughs and a great afternoon tea. And the Mother to be got lots of wonderful things.

Hi Everyone

We had a very nice weekend in Albany,it is about a 4hour drive further South from us .
It is a very pretty town and so cold as well .

We can go away whenever we want too now as we have no employees anymore the OH is more calm these days,I still feel for the Grandson though but Rob has told him if he shows he is ready to just think about his Apprenticeship and nothing else he will start it up again and get him qualified.

I don't know what is happening to the children of today,they all drink too much and are always getting into trouble....well over here in OZ anyway.

Looking forward to a nice hot bath tonight.

It was nice to hear from Evelyn again ,hope you have a nice stay in France.

It is my 60 th birthday on the 13 th of Sept but I don't know what to do for it .

The Mother In Law turns 90 on Sat and there is a big family party at the local hotel that has been orginised about 150 people expected.
Might just put mine on the back burner and just go out for a chinese.

Just decide between you where you want to have the party, and I'm sure we'll all be there. We might even get Robert out of his shell or cave for a little while.


Albany is a lovely town ........ last time we were in Oz (2006), friends from Perth took us to their cottage in Denmark for a couple of nights, and toured us around the area. We'd also driven around that coast back in 1975 rom Perht on our way back to Melbourne ..... long route round to get to the road across the Nullarbor!!



Josie .... glad you enjoyed the Baby Shower!


This could be the last time I post for a time .... we're planning on going to our cabin on Thursday, and won't be back until about the13th September. No electricity at the cabin, so we won't even bother taking the laptop with us. It's a 60 km trip into town and the nearest cafe with free internet access.

The weather is forecast to be cooler and damper than it has been for months ..... that should help the wildfire situation.

If it is too cold and damp .... we'll come home early!

Just been watching the Edinburgh Tattoo

Not only bagpipes & bands but New Zealand scottish dancing and the NZ army singing my favourite Maori song and the haka (sorry for the spelling Josie)

Apart from the occasional grumble from the corner it was very enjoyable - I do enjoy a good band or 10 and bagpipes.

It was sheer magic - no, it was more than that!!!!

Robert, I love bagpipe music but my daughter hates it. I think a man in full highland dress is a wonderful sight. My mum was born in Dundee on Hogmanay....guess there were some celebrations that night!!


Evelyn it was so good to hear from you again and very pleased that your family history seems to be coming together. Have a wonderful time in France - I'm sure you'll find time to go shopping for fantastic food.

Well here we are in Combourg,sun is shining and it is very pleasant at the moment.
Our Viv is having another go at the Macleods, bless her, she is very special.
I am a bit puzzled, Ron has not turned the T V on, he is reading last Sunday,s newspaper that he brought with him, its very peaceful.
You bet I shall come to the party but only as a guest I wont mussle in on someone elses celebrations, I couldnt stay away if there will be Lamingtons.
I had a delicious steak for lunch.
We go very often to the restuarant that we went to today and are quite friendly with the manager, he told us that his wife had a bad car accident and is now paralysed from the chest down,she is very young and they have 2 young sons, makes me think I should be more grateful for what I have. I do wish I had a magic wand.
I am going to sit out on the veranda and read my book

it's like November today ..... about 12C, and pouring with rain!

I lost internet connection last night from about 8pm my time (ca 4am UK) ............ so couldn't do my late night rounds!

I've noticed that this sometimes happens when we have a major weather change coming. Doesn't make any sense to me why that should be though!!

Evelyn ..... lovely to see you. I see on your thread that there has been some luck in getting further in finding your mother. That's a sad story about the young woman. So tragic.

Here's an update on J etc

They're doing well ......... although it took most of last week for MJ to adjust to the 4 hour time chage. But they are now getting him back on a regular schedule for sleeping etc. Then he'll start some real food ............... I think we start with a rice cereal-type of thing over here.

M started back to school yesterday (Monday). First 3 days for staff "things", including orientation for and of brand new teachers. Kids go back on Thursday ... then all h*** could break out!! It's a high school, taking the last 3 years of schooling, ages ca 15 to 18.

J is now going to look for a mother / baby play group as she feels that she can now make plans to get out of the house at regular times.

It's certainly quiet without them .... and I miss my morning play with him (usually as J went for her shower!) ................. but it's also lovely to be back on our own.


Going to have my hair cut this afternoon ...... only about 2 months later than it should have been done!! I look a bit like the Wild Woman of Borneo at the moment!

Good to hear that J and family are doing well. Do you get Farley's rusks over there? Don't tell anyone but I still eat them as biscuit occasionally. Sshhh. I was looking at baby food the other day and am amazed by the range now available.....much of it is organic and in an amazing variety of things.



Glad you will come to the party Evelyn, we always like a good time don't we? Wonder why Ron hasn't put the tv on? Mind you, a lot of rubbish on these days. Viv is good isn't she? She's given me a lot of help too bless her cotton socks. You can always have a good joke with her. What an awful thing to happen to that young woman. I firmly believe in counting my blessings especially when I hear of things like that.


Anne, you're going to end up with a blunt nose because it's always pressed to that grindstone of yours!!


At the car boot sale yesterday, my granddaughter stopped and looked at something displayed on the ground in front of a stall. "What is THAT?" she asked. THAT was a typewriter!! I felt very ancient as I tried to explain how it worked and it was the sort of thing I used when I worked as a shorthand typist in a bank. A look of blankness spread across her little face.


I've got both of them for their last day of the holidays tomorrow.......what shall I do? Pictures? Shopping? Tennis? Arrghhhh.

Sylvia, that's little Sophia just had her first solids at the weekend, the American grandparents were in attendance and it was all Skyped to us here in UK!!............

So far so good.

Lovely hair dos Sylvia & Cynthia

Goodness only knows what I look like then - couldn't visit the hairdresser last year due to the eye ops (I have very fly away hair - very fine & thick - load of it) and after not visiting the hairdressers for so long - it has grown a lot, to give an idea. I could do a good impression of Lady Godiva (top half only) and my hair would very easily cover my modesty. the majority of hairdressers here are very expensive - £35 for a cut & blowdry - £65 upwards for highlights & £90 for a perm (not that i need one) Aparently there is a little Polish hairdresser near the station who charges £10 for a cut & £15 for cut & blowdry - but they don't speak English - so you have to do a lot of gesturing.

We have just had a visit from a couple of hotels - who brought food with then in exchange for a 10 min talk from each of them. They have brought in several large trays of sandwhiches, large bowls of pasta salad & cous cous, Crisps and Crispy Cream doughnut - boxes of them all shapes sizes & types - chocolate ones & Strawberry ones - iced & filled ones.

Then you wonder why we all put on weight here.

Also they were giving away a present from the Hotel in Amsterdam. Its a bar of Chocolate (Milk or Plain dutch chocolate) showing the picture of the Nightwatch - its 15cm x 21 cm or 6 inches (WIDE) x 8 & a half inches (LONG) and 1 inch or 2 & a half cm THICK. The problem is i don't like chocolate - I AM SURE I WILL FIND SOMEONE WHO WANTS IT.

Now you know why they keep our noses to the grindstone Cynthia.

Evelyn - don't be silly - Sue & I would happily share our party with you.

Love the story about your little US Grand daughter - how sweet - I was looking after a little boy & he poured a whole bowl of baked beans down him & then opened the top of his nappy & pushed it all down there & just sat & chuckled at me. He wasn't so happy when I gave him a bath.

Well back to work - The doughtnut was wonderful i have to say.

Hi Everyone

I have had a housefull of people for the last two days,they left four hours ago and I am still not back to normal.

He is my Nephew,he turned up with his family and another couple with there two children ,I can tell you it was a sweeze for us all.

They rolled up in a van that seats a lot of people ....very nice really I could take all my family away with us , If the OH let me that is .

A few nice days of weather for them ,they have gone further down South ,just traveling around .

I am off to bed ,I am really had it .

Hi all

J phoned this morning to have a quick chat ............ not only will we be away at the weekend for our usual phone chat, but they are preparing themselves in Nova Scotia for the possibility that Hurricane Earl will hit on Saturday. We'll have to listen to the radio to find out what happens, but we are keeping our fingers crossed.

Hurricane Juan hit NS as a category 2 back in 2004 and did a lot of damage to buildings, ships and trees, etc, although I believe that no-one was even seriously injured, fortunately.

Earl was downgraded to a category 3 this morning, and might be a category 1 or 2 before reaching NS and/or Newfoundland. It may drop even as low as a tropical storm ..... which will still mean torrential rain

J said they are going out this evening to stock up on foods, especially canned, and to make sure the car petrol tank is filled up.

J&M lost a lot of frozen food back in 2004 when the electricity was out for several days, and they also hadn't got a full tank in the car ............ petrol stations weren't working with no electricity, so that was a problem! M is also going to make sure that they have 2 full propane tanks for the bbq .... so they have learnt some lessons!

M went back to school on Monday ...... staff training and preparation for 3 days, then the kids return tomorrow (Thursday). HOWEVER, it has been so hot this week that school might be cancelled after today ........ it has been registering 35C and over, but the Humidex factor (due to humidity) means that it has effectively been over 40C ......... and schools are not air conditioned.

J said the temperature is supposed to still be high on Saturday when Earl might hit ... that would be miserable!! 100% humidity, 100+kmh winds, etc etc.

Please think of her if you hear anything on the news about Earl ..... "south shore of Nova Scotia" would mean that there would be some effect on Halifax.

She also said that she had been waiting to get a high chair before starting MJ on solid food. The one they wanted was on back order until at least mid-September. Then this morning, she took MJ for a walk very early while it was cool (about 24C!), met a neighbour who said "Would you like a high chair?"! Seems they had family with young child visiting, borrowed a high chair from someone, and that person now didn't want it back!

So MJ has been practising sitting in a high chair today. I did mention black garbage bag on floor with newspapers on top, then high chair placed strategically in the middle .... makes for really easy clean-up!!!


Yesterday in Vancouver was the wettest EVER August day .............. about 55.8 mm rain officially, that's about 10x the normal average rainfall. It was also apparently the 16th wettest day ever in any season.

Add to that, the high temperature for the day was around 15C.


The sun is out again today, and the temperature is rising!


We are out at at a 60th birthday party this evening.
