An ipad!! Oh you lucky person Evelyn :-D :-D :-D :-D My grandchildren have them and they are so versatile and it's amazing what they can do.

My daughter is collecting old mobile phones for a charity which supports families with autism (she has Asperger's Syndrome). If she collects 185, she is eligible to claim an ipad. It would be brilliant for her because she loves that sort of technology and copes with it well. She's only got about 30 phones so far but we keep hoping.

So pleased your birthday went well Evelyn and it would be great to see you back on here again. If you want us to start up on Diane again, just say so and i will do another precis to put on your thread.

I am waiting for Debenhams to arrive and take away the chair/bed which is too cumbersome for us. Can't go out until they have been :-(

Never mind, it looks like a lovely day out there so I am grateful for small mercies. ........ :-D

Take care all.......Cx <3

Good morning all,
I am still playing with my I Pad, I am not very clever at closing down things and find that I have several open at once, if there is no X in the corner I am completely lost(is it an age thing)
Cynthia it would be wonderful if you would start up Dianes thread again,, I hate to feel that she is beating us all,I wonder what she was hiding?.
Must go and do some food shopping, I Pad wont do that for me.

Hi Everyone

Evelyn very happy to hear your Birthday went well and you got some good pressie's,I must admit all these new computer things scar me to death, you are much gamer than me Evelyn.

I have been reading some of the threads re the new look Genes and have entered my comments.
I have to say the new tree is slower and I don't like the new glare colour scheme, they have got the background a little better (with my help re turning down the brightness of my screen) I still think it could do with a bit more reducing.

I think I would rather have the bright Purple and the very bright green toned down a bit and that would do it for me.

As I said on my post on J..... thread a lot of the hype over the changes is just that we don't like changes and we get comfortable in what we already know so when someone comes a long and change things on us we don't like it.

I don't like changing what I have learnt myself so Ican see where he is coming from but he is very angry and that is not good for him ,Genes appears to be listing to what we are reporting to them so I suppose we just have to sit back and wait to see what if any they take on board.

Anyway not letting it spoil my day and stop me doing Genealogy ! :-D

We have another big storm coming in tonight and our Dau and hubby flying back from Bali tonight so I think they are in for a bad landing...will worry now until I physically see her again tomorrow.

Grandson and the dog have behaved very well while they have been with us but I shall be glad when I am free again.

Going to see if my newly acquired site of World FMP has anything on Diane.

Congrats to the Brits wonderfull Games so far, Aussies could have done a bit better but hey we can't be great all the time :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D only joking.

Have a good day everyone

Hello All,
Its me again still playing with my I Pad, should be doing housework but dont find that very appealing.
Where has everyone gone, was it something I said? have I upset you all?, hope not as I wouldnt do that for all the world.
We have had a nice sunny day here in the islands, I have been to have my hair done and am feeling somewhat human.
Guess I had better start cooking as my tummy tells me its time for food.
I will pop back soon just incase anyone is about.
Cheerio for now

Good heaven's Anne....what a noise! I've gone deaf now...... ;-)

I can't help it if the tree works for me now can I.....it must be something to do with the way I hold my mouth... :-D :-D

Some of the probs on this site have been sorted through using the compatability wotsit in Tools.

It gets quite embarrassing to say that you aren't having any problems when so many others are. :-(

Okay folks.......Evelyn's thread is back up and raring to go. I have done my best with a precis to bring everyone as up to date as I can. Evelyn, I need some feedback on there from you please - re the newspaper bit.

Hi Everyone

Wow ! that site on the Gr changes got very heated at times....shame realy

Funny but I did not get offended by the remakes made I thought he was spot on about the new look site really.

I am not computer Savvy and I don't mind who knows it ...I think that was his point in the beginning....it does take me a long time to work things out when they do these changes.

I am not even going to my tree until they sort it all out because I know I will do something wrong and it could spoil my tree for me and I don't have a tree anywhere else to back me up.

Before anyone says it..... dumb I know

I went out the other day to buy an outside tree but I don't know what one to buy, this is where the Genes tree was great for me because it was so easy to use as J...said.
So I am going to agree with J to a degree...maybe he just expressed himself just a bit to strongly at times but in my mind so did others everyones opinions are different re; this new look Genes esp the tree .....he does have some good points and I now have to get my Computer man out (another cost) to Gedcom my tree to Ancestry so I do have it in two places :-S

Cynthia good idea to bring everyone up to date with Evelyns thread ,it has been a while.

I did have a look the other day on my new aquired world FMP but again I am still learning how to use that site so it may take me a while .

I have my Grt Grandaughter today for a few hours..she has just had her second lot of vacinations this morning so mum has gone shopping and let me mind her just incase she gets a bit cranky.

Catch you all later

You will be pleased to know i have calmed down now Cynthia

Yesterday was a NIGHTMARE here in the office they all threw a few wobblers at some point - so if you cant beat them - join them It did feel good though.

Lot calmer today & we have an office buffet - so that was good - homemade Chocolate cake & it really is good too - just demolished some french bread with some very nice ham and beautiful cheese and olives with houmus & carrot sticks Yum Yum

WDYTYA back next week in the UK - 10 more weeks of interest on the TV

Sue you are so lucky looking after the little one - I bet you spoil her when you have her to yourself.

Dont know if its on sale in OZ - look for a stand alone programme called
ROOTSMAGIC - its a very very simple family tree programme - OH loves it and its so easy to use but you can do a lot with it - not that I do - and you can put photos on it.

It has a wonderful search facility its so easy to find any person in the tree - you can colour code families (which i have done) so you can easily see which side the ancestor belongs to.

We both love the Report function - after you have added a couple of hundred or so people you can run an error report and it shows up any silly errors - eg child born 100 years after mother died (wrong date) Father 96 when child born or mother was minus 50 years when child born.

OH did a classic - one of his lines had George son of George son of George etc I think there were 6 in all - he married his 5 x George to the 1 x George wife and added all the children - the report was really interesting - took him ages to try & get it sorted out - took me about 10 mins to work out what had happened - he wont do that again. Gave us a good laugh

Cynthia well done on the precis - it would be amazing to find Diane after all this time.

Well better go back to work (& the chocolate cake)

Take care all <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

SylviaInCanada Report 8 Aug 2012 21:59

Hi everyone

We had a good time up north. Stayed in town, and drove the 60 km to the cabin each day. The weather had been wetter than usual (surprise, surprise!!) ....... so the grass and Marguerite daisies were almost waist high!

As the lawn mower was among the items that "walked" back in May, OH had to use the weed eater to make a path down the driveway to the gate (only about 200' long), around the outside of the gate, and from the drive to the cabin. He managed to do some painting outside, and chopped the trunks of a couple of trees that had fallen across the farm road down to the flat meadow and creek .............. cutting out chunks of the trunks wide enough to walk through.

We thought the 4 or 5 trees that had fallen since last year had all been blown down during the winter ....... but he discovered that 2 of the ones across the farm road were actually "helped" on their way by BEAVERS!!! Both had had their trunks gnawed away near the base ..... it looks just like a tree faller would have done if cutting down a tree. AND they were both very big trees!

We brought away some more stuff ............... and now have a very nice patio set of aluminium and glass table and 4 chairs on our sun deck. We've never had a good set down here before

We'll go back up for 3 or 4 days in 2 or 3 weeks time, so OH can finish painting the outside ...... then we'll see where we go with selling it.

We had the strangest weather last night .................... thunder, lightening, and very heavy rain "squalls". It began just before 7 pm, and lasted until around midnight.

Today it is cloudy, and very much cooler than it has been ................... the temperatures here in Vancouver were above 30C from about last Friday or Saturday through until Monday, then dropped slightly ............. to about 27C

Himself has been sleeping in the basement since we got back ..... it is very cool down there (he's even needed a quilt). I can't sleep on that bed, so I've stayed in the bedroom, with 2 fans blowing on me, and just a sheet for covering.

We've both slept very well :-D :-D :-D :-D

Came back to all these changes!

Don't use my tree, or the various records, so I cna't say anyhting about them

BUT I do find the background too bright, and glaring. So sorry to see that Sally is leaving because of it.

Please ........ send an email to GR at [email protected] to complain, and let them know you have a problem.

Evelyn ................ nice to see you posting back on here.

take care everyone

BTW

That J... .............. was/is nothing but a wind-up artist, and very rude with it.

having slated the Welsh and Australian threads as having no part of GR, because GR was a genealogical site, and then having slated those who posted on there as ones who basically were of no consequence ...................

............ he posted on the Welsh thread earlier today, making fun of how everyone on the street where he lives knows him, and how he knows which woman has or has not had a hysterectomy.

It was a wicked post, basically making fun of, as he called it somewhere, "the banal postings" such threads.

He also said on a thread to me that the reason that he used the wrong terminology was because he wrote in Welsh, and had to use a translator programme to convert into English. BUT he posted on the Welsh thread that he had worked for many years all over England, and had now moved back to Wales.

What he says is not to be trusted

Kiwibird Report 9 Aug 2012 07:15

Hi Sylvia... trade your 27C for my 8C. It's cold wet and miserable here.

Had what I thought was another breakthrough in the hardest and most frustrating part of my Family tree, only to discover lies and more lies!!! :-0 :-0

The woman I think is the Mother of my My Great Grand Mother's first Husband Abraham Cross appears to have married one Christian Henry Cross a Ships cook in Liverpool in 1861, Had Abraham and a sister then left her husband
And got pregnant to a James Craney
and in 1871 Census it states that she is his wife they have a 5 month old Son Alexander Craney and her 2 children are shown with the surname Cross and as step children.
Where it gets interesting, is that I have found another Parish Marriage Record in 1882 in which she and James finnaly get married ! ;-)

Only 12 years after she lied in the Census making out that she was his wife
. In the 1881 Census it shows that Abraham and his Sister have left home, but there are now 2 more Sons of James.
In the second Parish marriage Record she states not only is she 30years old :-D definatly a big 'porkie' but that she is a Spinster and uses her Maiden Name. The name of her Father and his occupation as Corn Dealer and Place of Birth in Ireland are the same on both Marriage Records, so we know it's the same person.

As if her duplicity was not enough her First Husband Christian Henry Cross lied about who he was and apart from The Marriage Entry have found no other record s for him, the fact that he was a Ships Cook and stated that his Father was Bastiano Cross? I am starting to strongly think that he was of Portuguese or Spanish origin and Anglised his name. And most likely dissapeared back to the Continent. So my chances of going back any further than this would seem to be impossible. :-(

So once again this miserable family has beaten me. :-( :-(

So will migrate to another part of my tree and work on that instead.

Suppose I better go and Make some dinner.

take care catch you all later Josie :-) :-) :-) <3 <3 <3

Hi Everyone

Josie sorry but that one looks to confusing for me to help you with.

Sounds like you are having very cold weather the same as us,I have usually got my Roses cut back by now but with all the frost we are having just can't do them yet.

Our Grt Grandaughter was great to look after she is such a good baby always smiling, now her parents have bought her a swing thing that hangs from the doorway and she can bounce her self up and down ..she just laughs with excitement.

Must go shopping shortly cupboards are a bit empty after having the 17yr old grandson for the week.
He was good and us oldies did not cramp his style to much as they say :-D

Drop in later tonight....enjoying the O Games very much.

Glad you've calmed down Anne - chocolate cake can work wonders can't it?? ;-)
Must remember to have a look at the site you mentioned too.

I don't mind cranky babies...........................as long as I can hand them back eventually :-D :-D

I hope folk are now settling down with the changes to the site. To be honest, I've got used to it now and I think the brightness has been toned down too. Hopefully, that will make it easier for those who have eye probs.

I've been meeting myself coming back this week. When it's term time, my daughter tends to spend quite a bit of time with us so it leaves me less time to play about on here.

I've also got a relation of OH who is interested in his paternal family tree. I'm not as gifted as most so it takes me a while to get things sorted. I do hope it doesn't turn out to be as convoluted as Josie's tree :-S

This relation was very helpful to me a couple of weeks ago when I wanted something translated from Russian. He works as a translator so that was very, very, useful.

OH went for tests yesterday to see if he is borderline diabetic. We had to wait for 2 hours in the doctor's waiting room listening to people coming in and describing their ailments to the receptionist :-(

He gets the results next week. I do hope he's not borderline as he has enough to cope with to be honest. Hey ho.

Had better go and get ready for the day - whatever it may bring......

Love to all.... Cx <3 <3

Cynthia

If your OH is borderline diabetic, I hope his surgery will put him on Metformin tablets.

I was diagnosed over two years ago and my doctor insisted on the tablets, rather than trying to control with just diet. Apart from giving up my great loves - chocolate and ice cream - I can honestly say my diet is pretty much the same.

I lost 2 stone initially, but have now plateaued - think I need greater portion control.

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Aug 2012 20:47

Hi Sue

and everyone

a lovely sunny day here.

C .................

I tested as what they call pre-diabetic here back in mid-June

I'm on a 3 month trial to see if I can control it with diet, exercise, and losing some weight.

It's been easy-peasy to adjust so far ..................... so I am hoping that it works, and that I don't have to take any more drugs.

I no longer add sugar to anything, tea, coffee, cereals, etc.

I check the labels on bought food, and try to choose the ones with the least amount of sugar or sugar-free.

I eat more veggies and fruits than I used to to do

and I have reduced and/or changed the size of my meals.

I have 3 meals and 3 snacks a day

I'm following the "plate" method .....................

use a salad plate rather than a dinner

divide the plate into quarters. Meat occupies 1 quarter (or is about the size of a pack of cards). Veggies occupy 1 half of the plate, using 3 -4 different veggies. Carbohydrate, in the form of rice, pasta or potatoes take up the remaining 1 quarter.

Brown rice or past is preferred .............. I don't like them, so haven't yet gone that far.

Potatoes are the least recommended ................ but I still have ½ a small potato.

You can eat desserts, as long as they do not have a lot of sugar in them

You can eat cheese, yoghurt, etc etc ............. unless you are lactose-intolerant like me!!

Check out the Diabetes Societies advice on the web.

The 2 sites I used are the food guides on .................

http://www.diabetes.ca/diabetes-and-you/nutrition/just-basics/

http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-basics/prevention/pre-diabetes/if-you-have-prediabetes.html

I'm sure there will be an equivalent for England.

I googled diabetic menus/meals/foods

Snacks can be cheese, yoghurt, hummus, carrot sticks ............... you'll get lots of ideas for that.

I am much more limited than most people because of the lactose intolerance.

I have lost around 10 lbs so far ........ and I am not taking as much exercise as I should! That's 10 minutes walking per day.

It has made no difference to our usual meals, except for the desserts.

You can even have "treats" such as chocolate or icecream, or a cinnamon bun ........... if you do it in absolute moderation, and not every day

1 or 2 dark chocolate ginger chocolates once or twice a week

half a scoop of icecream once a week

a small portion of the cinnamon bun

1-3 dates (very high sugar content, even though good fibre content) a couple of times a week

etc etc etc

Hi Everyone

Wild Wet Wollie night for us last night ...glad to see this morning that the roof is still on .

Sylvia I have just been diagnosed with borderline diabetes so your list is very helpful to me but it is going to be hard as I am a bit of a sweet tooth and I love spicy food.

I will do better I think in summer as we have a lot of barbies and salads.

ON that other thread...I have been having a bit of a look around on the threads he has visited and to be honest I am shocked at how he is going around upsetting other people.

I can't understand what he is getting out of it ,at first I saw him as being picked on and being 92 ;-) I now think that is rubbish...I can't see a 92 yrs old speaking that way, not that generation ...just not that rude.

I take a lot of things back that I said on his thread but not all...still hate the way some helpers speak.

The rain is just pelting down at present ...collecting it for drinking as we still have not got our Water authority to change back yet from Chlorinated to UV.

Could be flogging a dead horse with that one I think.

Off to pull some posts :-S

Have a good day everyone
