Today (Sunday) is our 45th wedding anniversary ................. and OH gave me a big bunch of freesias, which were one of the flowers in my wedding bouquet.

Sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with borderline diabetes. I'll have to go and have a fasting test in about 3-4 weeks, then see whether I have been successful.



Re that guy ......... he's NOT 92!!

He's somewhere between 60 and 70 ..................... he commented somewhere that he was past retirement age, but was still working full time, and would retire at the end of 2013.

Now, I don't know what retirement age is in the UK ................ 65??

But I must get my tree off Genes first...I do not like the new tree at all so i will transfer it to Ancestry.

If I Gedcon it from Genes do they send it to me by email then I send it to Ancestry is that correct .

I have never done a Gedcom before so flying blind with this one

Sue - I haven't done a Gedcom from GR - but usually I download it to a memory stick - then upload it on to ancestry -

To export your family tree as a GEDCOM file, click the button below. Your GEDCOM file will be emailed to you once it has been prepared. This process normally takes 5-10 minutes depending on the size of your tree.

Well first time I have seen this as an email - so looks like you get it as an attachment

Went in to Ancestry

On the Upload a Family Tree page on Ancestry, click on the "Browse" button to the right of "Choose file". This will bring up a window in which you should locate the appropriate family tree file or GEDCOM file on your hard drive. When you've selected the appropriate family tree file, click the "Open" button. Finish filling out the information on the page, and Ancestry will begin processing your family tree.


Sue looks very easy - in simple terms (In theory)

GR will send you an email with an attachment -
save the atttachment to your own drive (on the computer) -
then go into Ancestry - there are a few boxes -
the one that says Choose file -
hit the browse button & pick the letter of your drive -
click on the file you just saved (it should appear in the box

In the next box - give your tree a name

I would then untick the box and keep your tree private for the time being


Then click upload

Should take a couple of mins to do - sounds very easy - If I lived near you I would offer to do it for you

As long as you remember to just take your time when you do it - it does not matter how slow you go - do it at your own pace.

You can also use the Gedcom for Rootsmagic - but I have to admit - I do like to input the details myself - and on Rootsmagic you can colour code - I have the four lines all in different colours - so I can see at a glance which person belongs to which Grandparent.

Thank you for all the sound advice about the pre-diabetes condition. He doesn't get the results until later this week. Mind you, he saw his doc yesterday and it never even came up in the conversation.. :-S


Anne, I'm going to have to copy your good advice out.......I once used a gedcom and got into such a muddle that I haven't tried since. Mind you, it was a long time ago and I'm a bit more computer savvy than I was then so, hopefully, I won't be as dense.... :-D


How come retirement is so busy for me? I used to think that life would calm down a bit................ :-S

My pea shingle area is no more.

With the help of 3 neighbours last Friday, the remaining shingle was removed - I probably shifted 5 tonnes on my own. 3 tonnes of topsoil were delivered and tipped on the area - 60 rolls of turf were delivered.

Friday afternoon realised that 3 tonnes of topsoil unlikely to be enough and ordered another 3 tonnes to be delivered on Saturday. Ended up using about 2 tonnes of this second batch.

My nephew arrived at 11.00 and we finished the job at 21.10 - it was too dark to take a photograph. Had recorded Mo Farah and Tom Daley to watch while we enjoyed our roast dinner planned for 20.00.
My nephew really worked so hard, and being somewhat of an OCD mentality everything had to be perfect. His partner worked hard removing rubbish from my large back garden and she half filled a skip.

After they left at 22.30 I watered the area and found 2 turves upturned - immediate thought was the 'witch' had caused the damage, but realised it must be an animal. Worse was to follow as in the morning I could have cried when I saw that not only 10+ turves had been displaced, but that there were bite size pieces of turf everywhere. The fox cubs I had secretly admired - that live under my garden shed - had been looking for worms.

Garden centre recommened SCOOT, a fox repellent. This has to be sprayed on and allowed to dry - before it rains or the area watered. I am still waiting to do this. Their attacks have continued though the number of turves disturbed is decreasing.

I sent a photograph to the County Councillor and asked what is the next step. He thought it was an excellent job and would pass the info to the Highways Enforcement Officer - I await the verdict.

Some good did come of this unfortunate matter. I spoke to many more of my neighbours. I did more exercise over the past 4 weeks than I have done over the past 4 years - and felt better for it - not bad for someone rapidly approaching 70.

I have a number of children that i believe are from the same marriage.

I have been checking whether they were christened/baptised as this generally gives me their birth date, the parents names and the father's occupation.

This worked well until I had over a thousand records to search through on one of the children.

I used to use a programme on Family search that gave all the children christened at a particulalr church, but do not remember how.

Any thoughts?

Arthur - well done - such a shame you had to a) pay out again & b) change it back

I think you need to find the batch ref of the christening you need - then add that ref to the search criteria and it brings up everything recorded on that batch at that time. The front screen has a search by Batch Number

I am sure this is the one for the Church records - not the pedigree file

Well I just tried it and it brough up records for 2 different churches

Could be because they are both very small parishes and done at the same time.

On a Census found a head of family, a widow, who was a Bible Reader (unemployed)

Had not heard of this before and wonder whether it meant you went to someone's home or it was in Church. Cannot believe it was well paid.

Bible Reader is not listed among the many strange jobs.

Hi everyone


wilting under the heat here ..... it's 31.4C in the shade in our back garden, at about 5:30 pm


That means it is well over 35C inside the house ....... even with several fans blowing.



Arthur ............... it seems that Bible Reader is still a valid job description!

I googled the term ................. can be used as part of the Minister's job description, or in Bible Class


Maybe in your case, she used it because it demonstrated that she could read.

poor little thread!



The weather has cooled down ......... thank heavens!!

It only got to 25C in my back garden today ................ but it feels cooler than that.

I even went our for a short walk mid-morning ............ it was only about 20C, so very pleasant.


We are going back up to the cabin on Wednesday, and will return on Sunday.

We will again stay in the hotel in town, and drive the 60km each way to the cabin every day.


Hopefully, OH will get the outside painting finished, and he will also put up the shutters on the 4 windows that can get damaged or broken by flying branches or stones if we do not cover them. We can get some pretty fierce winds coming up the valley!


So, don't worry if you don't see me until next week :-D :-D

Enjoy the trip to your Cabin Sylvia, sure you wouldn't like to swap places, am sitting here shivering in the cold our high today was 11C and that was 5 hours ago back down to 8 C now. Waiting for OH to light the Wood Burner.

Have not had any work for couple of weeks, hope to have some more beginning Sept. have been spending the time researching and extending my Maternal Grandfather's tree on a site I must not Mention ;-) otherwise GR will come down on me like at on of Bricks :-P

Yes thank you had a good weekend at home - the weather was a bit too humid for us - very warm - bad nights sleep at the moment.

Dont think we are ever happy with the weather in this country.

I love the heat but can take it when its humid - which is why we love Spain so much - Oh would move us there if we had the money & retired.

Years ago when we first got together I said i would love to live abroad, OH said he would never live outside the UK. Then we had our first holiday in Sapin & he didn't want to come home. Funny how people change - Spain did somethign to him - he pining for a holiday back there again.

Hi Everyone

Been a bit busy lately..the OH is having a lot of trouble with his neck.

It has been a long injury that has played him up for years but just lately it has been giving him a lot of pain so off to the doc,he is sending him to the hospital up in Perth as he believes he now need it to be operated on.

I always said he is a pain in the neck :-D :-D :-D

I suppose I have to get used to him being home all the time.... for a while anyway.

I have always had my own space when he was at work but now with him home it is going to take a bit of getting used to.

Have not been on the computer for a few days so will take a while to catch up on all your news.

My grandmother's sister married a German in1900 - family name HAACK.

Checking births of children they had the surname Haack. However checking electoral rolls after WW1 I noticed that the spelling was HACK.

One son Claus George Haack died as George Haack - his probate details said Claus George , also known as George Claus, also known as George Haack.

Would they have had to change their name legally or would it become 'custom & practice'.

I thought death certificates would have required their birth name to be recorded.

Hi Old, Many people Anglicized their names between WW1 and 2 often like your Relative by dropping out letters. Or shortened the name.

I do not think it had to be officially registered.


One line of my family had the Surname Cock and somewhere around 1900 they changed the spelling to Cox.
