Whoa, hold on! the 60's were somewhat more enlightened than you portray John. I sat the IBM exams along with all the male applications for their computer programming vacancies! Whilst I was head of D & S at Sperry Univac.

You had the skills then the doors were opened.

I think one area where Welsh scores is in different names for sheep. My father in law used to be a farm valuer and knew so much about sheep.

He once rattled off various words he used to describe them - and I think it was over 100!! Different ages, different sexual conditions etc. English only seems to have ram, ewe, lamb and a couple of others. Unless you know different :-)

Only good jobs for women was teaching, John. In 1973 at the age of 20 I was managing a office for a large adult education organisation. I was doing payroll and supervising 2 other staff members as well as ordering supplies. Might not be up to your standard but I was doing pretty well.....for a woman.

Why has this thread become a competition between Wales and England :-0

I could listen to Sian Phillips or my imaginary wife whispering in my ear all day. Whereas Cilla Black, Kathy Burke and Beryl Reid would not have same effect :-)

SueSprout. I was more thinking of those with little or no work experience.

SueMaid. Things changed for women in 1960's. I had an aunt who was quite senior in 1950's in oil company. But she had to accept that she could not be married and retain that sort of position. And to have a good job as a woman was remarked upon - she was a pathfinder.

When I became a bank clerk in 1964, women were not allowed to serve on the counter in any banks other than Barclays - which was the most liberal and progressive. It was felt that women did not give the right impression - cf Dad's Army with Wilson and Pike on tills.

But women had to leave when they got pregnant...at least at ICI where I worked.....at about 6 months.
Just thought that banking got a bit easier in the late60's early 70's due to decimalisaton.

If there is one conclusion I would draw, it is that there has been NO competition between England and Wales to see which is best country to live in and which is best language. We have just given our personal opinions.

Someone said that English vocabulary is much greater than Welsh, and that is a fact. I pointed out that Welsh has more words for sheep than English - and probably more words for other animals too. That is a fact. Nothing competitive in that.

Vive la difference, I say :-D Wales and England and Scotland working together (whether united politically or no) will always be stronger in the world than Australia and New Zealand combined.

The Cardiff accent is a bit iffy - that's Grangetown, Splott etc. - I have lots of rellies in Grangetown
