TessAkaBridgetTheFidget Report 16 Oct 2011 23:05

Popping in, am still nearly drowning in paperwork, but now have my chin above the water line.
Dug up half-a-dozen home grown potatoes today. Had planted some sprouting spuds a little while ago, instead of binning them.

Will have to do this again, but this time give them some more room.

Have been rather busy with little outings too.
Been to a couple of talks. (one from a finger print expert) and will be going to another two over the next week or so.
Have also had my hair cut (restyled) at a College in town. AND paid a couple of visits to the Library.
Gerald hope that your second interview goes well. I think that the best way to learn lines is to say them out loud. Have you got somewhere that you can do this?

Hazel, enjoy your holiday. Re twins in the family. I have an aunt by marriage who was a twin. Her sister died a few years ago (about seven) but at 101 aunty is still going strong.
A wonderful lady, she lived in her own home and does a lot of her own cooking washing etc.

Bridget, pleased to hear that your grand-daughter has got her special vest, hope that she gets used to it quickly.

Not a lot to write about unless anyone can let me know how I can change my tree name on Anc...ry? It is driving me made. I must do this soon so keeping my fingers and toes crossed.

Sun is just coming out now so will take my coffee outside and think positive rhombus for you all.

Bridget I am really intrigues as to how your friend using one computer can cause all of your computers plus your ipad to go wrong. What did your OH have to do to fix them all? I can only think she disconnected from the internet in some way.

Berona

Berona Report 17 Oct 2011 23:28

Bridget - it will take 200 posts to get to page 100. There are 20 posts on each page, regardless of size, so it depends on how 'chatty' we feel - but I'm sure this thread will make it - and soon!

Greenfingers Report 18 Oct 2011 16:09

Well Berona, we will just have to send a few lines at a time so that we make it to 100

SpanishEyes Report 18 Oct 2011 19:55

AnninGlos,
The system is very delicate here in Spain and it is not uncommon for the computers to go down without help.
We think that she tries to use it in the same way as she would at home, but she has a different provider, lives on sea level and does not appear to understand that our telephone connection is different to hers' .
Also I did say that I did not want her to move any of the various plug ins but she ignored this and brought a plug in which she tried to export all that she had done on our computers. So she actually used two computers and my
IPad.
It was only when other people told us that she has had the same results in their homes that I became concerned.

I do not like having to say in the future "no" if she asks, but there is little else I can do.

We have had two other friends use our main comp since then and no problem what so ever, although the electricity was off for about 4 hours a couple of hours ago and the comps went back on without any problem!!

Berona and Jan, thanks for the optimistic forecast re reaching 100 pages, it would be fun to achieve.

Good night

Bridget in Spain :-D

AnninGlos Report 18 Oct 2011 20:24

Bridget, I think you may have to be honest with her (or sort of) and say that you can't let anyone use your computers now because when somebody used them (say you are not saying who -be mysterious-) they went wrong so you can't risk it as they are very sensitive.

AnninGlos Report 18 Oct 2011 20:32

We have had a couple of nice days out in the past week. Last Wednesday we ignored the weather forecast that said it would rain and went to Westonbirt arboretum anyway. We drove via Painswick, Stroud and Tetbury and the sun shone all the way with dark clouds in the distance. We had coffee when we got there then walked round. The colours are a little disappointing so far this year. They are usually better after the first frosts but the wind has brought a lot of the leaves down. still it was a good walk in the fresh air, we then drove back across the Cotswolds, stopping at Uley Burrow to take photos out over the Severn Valley (It was windy but still hadn't rained.) We stopped for lunch at an old mill, where we had not eaten before and it was very good, we both had the carvery. We then drove home. We left at 0915 and got home at 14.40 so a good long day out. And still it didn’t rain. We needed it to wash the car off, our neighbours have had block paving laid across the front of their house and the dust from the cutting of bricks had settled on our car. OH has since given in and hosed it down!

Then today we drove over to Chepstow driving down the notorious A48 (The most dangerous road in Gloucestershire. 39 fatalities in recent years). It was a beautiful sunny day and we arrived unscathed thank goodness. Probably because it was mid morning and the accidents seem to happen early morning or evening. Or maybe it is all the signs stating the number of deaths and the fact that the number can be altered, nobody wants to be number 40! We met up with a friend in Chepstow garden centre. She is staying with her sister in Chepstow, she lives in Essex so it is a handy place to meet up when she visits. We had a nice chat over lunch then drove back over the bridge, admiring the view of the River Severn in the sunshine and back down the M5, stopping at a local garden centre for coffee before driving home.

Good morning, it is just after 6am here and it feels quite chilly outside so having my first cup of tea in the sitting room. It is also still dark and therefore cannot see down into town or the sea.

OH went out last night to watch the West Ham football match, but they lost but only one goal was scored. He took the result very well ( I think he is finally becoming a grown up, re football) !

Not sure what we will be doing today, I think we have the day to ourselves, so we can choose exactly what to do, or do not want to do.

I am cleaning my family history on the other large programme, I have duplicated so many people so now deleting, which is tedious but essential. Fortunately a cousin 3 times removed is helping me and we put an asterix on the one to keep and a X on those to be deleted, it will take a while but be worth it.
Talking of finding our ancestors and family members, can anyone please tell me how I find ancestors in South Africa?

OH cooked a really good lamb curry yesterday, and today I have to cook a good chicken meal, so will look on Culinary thread as there are so many good ideas on there.

Ann, I think you are right about how we tell our friend that we are not letting people use the computer(s) due to the problems that occur at times. Of course in an emergency it would be a different matter. Of course she does have a comp of her own and shone even has difficulties with that.

Just finished my cup of tea, usually have coffee but fancied tea today, good English tea, really enjoyed it.

I will look in this evening to see who has posted, meanwhile I wish everyone a very good day.

I wonder if anyone has a topic, as we used to have a while ago, I will try to think of something and hope others will as well. We have had subjects such as describe where you live, famous women, history of various types etc...

Bridget in Spain :-)

Greenfingers Report 19 Oct 2011 09:00

If the friend needs the comp for an emergency, then my suggestion is that you use your computer and get her to dictate to you..that way you are in control .

Suggestion for topic Favourite Historical character or Favourite Book character.

Off to my art club this morning, so will look in tonight

Jan,

Thanks for you suggestion re the next topic.
I hope that others also send one or two suggestions and then we can make a decision.
Meanwhile I will put my brain into the right state and see what I can suggest.
I will make the cut off date as the 29 th as that will allow some time to decide which one we will vote on. Do you or anyone have an alternative suggestion?

I have packed away all the summer clothes and put out the autumn & winter clothes instead. OH actually asked for a jumper today so I knew that it was time to accept that summer is over.

It did mean that I could check all the clothes, dispose of those which had had there last breath, and find clothes I had forgotten about......Sods law will say I will regret this. :-P

We have just finished the washing up, so going to relax now and say goodnight to you all, you will all be in my prayers and thoughts.

Greentiedmonster Report 19 Oct 2011 19:55

Well it is nearly a week since I contributed and what a lot has happened.

Firstly on Saturday morning first thing OH and myself together with ten others walked from our church in Primrose Hill in North London to Westminster Abbey on the National Pilgrimage to St.Edward the Confessor's tomb - he is the only saint buried in the United Kingdom I was informed (He was also one of three Kings that died in 1066) - It was a beautiful Mass - the Bishop of Exeter presided and there were about 2000 in the congregation - we were very lucky being right at the front right hand side, and then we spent nearly two hours exploring the Abbey and the Abbey shop! We then walked across London including going up the Mall and seeing the new second cenotaph (for World War II victims) and eventually finished up in Pizza Express in Holborn.

Sunday was St.Luke's day at church - again we had a lovely service - with laying on of hands and anointing (Luke is the patron saint of healers)

Monday was interview day - I had never been to a group interview before - there were about 75 of us in the room - we were given a couple of tasks to do as groups (6 groups with about 12 of us in each one) to check out how we reacted in team mode. It went pretty well, although in our group we did have a know-it-all who metaphorically fell flat on his face a couple of times. I haven't heard about the outcome as yet.

Tuesday was another day at my voluntary work - and I had the privilege of being left in sole charge.
In the evening I escorted OH to her Adult Confirmation class - even at my age I can learn so many new things.
The weather is getting a bit damp and cold in the mornings so for the last two days I have taken OH to work by car at 4.30am.
Tonight I am about to watch my beloved team play in France - hoping for a win. Sorry for Bridget's OH and West Ham, but they were playing the top side and they are still second in the Championship, so that is probably why he was so calm about the result!

Bridget - I can't believe your friend and computers, but she is obviously using a memory stick which corrupts your computers.

Jan - I still haven't got back into the garden, but I think I will try again over this weekend

Berona - how are the Sudoku's going - are into Evil ones?

Hazel - even I have heard of the notorious A48 - I think you'll find it is the most dangerous road in the country not just in Gloucestershire!

I shall be looking again for the rest of the week and if anything interesting crops up I'll let you know.

Everyone keep well
Gerard :-)

MaryinSpain Report 20 Oct 2011 10:09

Hi All
Well it has been ages since I contributed to this thread . but I have come to the conclusion my life is boring and no one would want to read about my days.
As Bridget has said the temperature has cooled down and I am finding it so much better. This year I have found it so unbearably hot - yes I know I sjjould not moan - why did I come to Spain if not for the better weather and chilled out way of life. But I have not bought out my winter clothes yet - although hubby went to work this morning in a long sleeved short and his jacket.
I wonder if I could ask you for your thoughts and prayers for our youngest son who is having - in his words - 'a snall procedure' on his heart - this is due to take place on 1st November and I just know I will not be able to concentrate on anything until I hear from him. He has an irregular heart beat which has caused domething to grow which is not needed - sorry he does not understand medical terms and in this instance neither do I. But apparently it is simple to do involving a wire going up through the groin to the heart and then the extra piece is burnt off. He will be out of hospital the following day so long as everything goes well. Will obviously let you lnow how it goes but your prayers would be appreciated.
Well I have cleaned one bathroom and off to do the other one.
Gerard - hope you hear something positive from the interview very soon.
Take care all and have a good day
Love Mary xx

Mary

Never forget one persons idea of a boring life isn't necessarily so to someone else !! Hope your son will be OK, I am sure he will be, we will all pray for him

Gerard keeping fingers crossed for you,.........shirking doing the garden, cannot think what you have been doing!!!!!!!!!!

And Sorry ...was out in the garden this morning, had oH clearing the pond of unwanted greenery...not the best job, but better to do it now rather than in February !!

Been to my W.I. this afternoon, and recruited two new members, and also two ladies that haven't been able to come came back, it was lovely to see them, as President I hate to lose any of them, they are a lovely bunch. We had an excellent speaker, one of our favourites, the whole room was silent !

AnninGlos Report 20 Oct 2011 17:57

Wracking my brains Bridget. Can't remember what we have had as topics so far. have we had 'Our school'?

Gerard while I like the name Hazel I am intrigues as to why you have re-named me :-D :-D I hope you get good results from the interview. Yes the A48 may well be the worst road in the country. It has a bad camber/bend in one place which is where a lot of accidents happen. But, dare I say it, if everyone stuck to the 50/40/30 speed limits fewer people would be killed. And it is often the poor devil who is not speeding who is killed. The majority who have been killed in recent years were in the 18 - 30 age group!

Mary, of course you are not boring and we love to hear about your life in Spain.

Jan, always something to be done in the garden isn't there? We have a bush we need to get out, a Choisia that has gone very big and straggly. So that is next.

Berona Report 21 Oct 2011 00:38

I agree. One person's idea of boredom is another person's idea of heaven!
We are being visited by the Queen and Duke at the moment and I have to admire their stamina......I am not much behind the Queen in age and I have reached the age of not wanting to go anywhere! The peace and tranquility of home is ideal for me, so I have the utmost admiration for them to have made the trip - ten days of flying from one Capital to the other - lots of walking and talking to people, and giving speeches.
If I were as rich as the Queen, I would have retired long ago - but she is true to the oath she took back in 1953 and I can't help admiring her for it.

AnninGlos Report 21 Oct 2011 09:07

She really does seem to have more than her fair share of stamina. I suspect she has her Mother's genes. She is the best ambassador that we have. It is so nice to see the welcome she has had from your fellow countrymen and women Berona, even those who are Republicans.
