Actually, I was thinking of my happy times in Glasgow (a long time ago) as I was watching the Celtic / Rangers game this afternoon.

Hello Folks....all very chatty I see and so good to have Evelyn and Robert popping in again.

Anne, when you said Take That (scream), I thought you were keen on them and that you were screaming in excitement....obviously not. Have fun!

Glad to know that your dad is doing ok Sue...sounds like a grand old chap to me. Do give him our very best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Robert, do you have an electric blanket in that little shell of yours.......wonder where your electricity comes from though??

Evelyn, I am hopeless with the tv controls....OH tends to do everything and I honestly don't even know how to put a dvd on........hangs head in shame. I am sure that, with Frank's help, you will manage just fine. The secret is to let Ron think that he knows what he is doing :))

Frank you brought back some memories when you mentioned KLM. My aunt and uncle used to fly over from Canada with that airline many, many, moons ago.

Furry creatures? I'm rather into meercats at the moment and love the adverts on tv. Was very tempted to buy one of the toys on sale - it was wearing a little red house jacket - but decided enough was enough!!

Hoping to settle down and watch Downton Abbery soo - fond memories of Upstairs Downstairs I suppose.

Take care all. Love. Cx.

Hey Evelyn,

You have a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) and they are brilliant as it's like a computer hard drive onto which all your TV programs can be recorded.

No worries about old tape videos and finding another cassette to pop in.
You will have an EPG (Electronic Program Guide) which will display all of the channels available to you for recording.

So starting at channel 1(BBC 06.00) you can move along horizontally through the day until you find the program you wish to record and quite simply press the (USUALLY RED RECORD BUTTON).

That's it...............it will record on the hard drive.

Even if you switch off the TV it will still record unless of course you switch off the Digibox.

If you start at channel 1(BBC 06.00) and move down vertically you will go through all the channels from 1 - 35 or just enter a channel number...........all very simple, I'm sure even Ron could do it with his eyes shut ;))

You will also have a "Library or Index" which will show you all of your recorded programs, just run down the list until you find what you want to watch and click play.

When you have watched your program you can keep it or delete it as required and the only thing stopping you from recording any more is the size of your hard drive.

Mine is an 80 GB drive which presently has about 30 films on it as well as all of my OH's Corrie, East Enders, Emmerdale etc etc...........

You will have a twin tuner which means you can watch one channel ........Coronation Street while Ron records....Come dine with me. or if you are not watching anything, out for lunch etc you can record two programs simultaneously.

Any problems just shout.

Simples !

No, Cynthia,

Frank and I are hot blooded Scotsmen. We don't need kick-starting!! Kicking - probably but not kick -starting.

Hi Everyone,

Cynthia I agree with you Meercats are so adorable,
they have some at the Zoo and they have ousted the chimps out as being the most popular exhibit.
Thanks to reading Wind in the Willows and Beatrix Potter in my childhood I also thing Moles and Dormouse's are quite adorable. I draw the line however when it comes to Rats, Mice, Stoats and Ferrets.

Dear Robert there is no doubt that you and Frank being Scots don't need 'kickstarting' lets face it you would have to be tough to survive in such a wild wind blown place such as Scotland. Is it any wonder that the early Scots invaded England, they wanted to live somewhere much warmer. Robert you being a case in point.

Enjoying today Monday, off work as it is a Holiday weekend here and to day is Labour Day or in my case do nothing day.
Did all my housework on Saturday, apart from some baking this morning as we have family coming this afternoon I am enjoying playing on my computer, actually have been doing some housekeeping among my folders.
I read somewhere on one of the boards that someone had got themselves an external hard drive which they store all their Family research on. I thought this was a good idea and am looking to do the same thing.
Because my main tree here on Genes has nearly 5000 people in it I thought it prudent awhile ago to download a copy into my Computer, where I also have 3 smaller trees, this is what comes of researching not only my parents family but also my husbands. Along with photos and other material I realise I need to back it up otherwise I could lose the lot.
I am lucky that while reasonably savvy around my Computer my Son is a computer nerd and will be able to help me.

Off to make some lunch,
Take care will catch you all later. Josie

Hi Everyone

So nice to have you all back again ,I got a little worried there for a minute but I do understand we all have very busy lives.

As I said I did go up to perth on Sat just to check on my dad ,make sure he is not telling me little porkies.
I do feel relieved to have seem him.

Evelyn you sound like you are doing fine working out all these boxes ,I am scared to death with it all .
We did buy a new Hd TV that solved a few problems as we don't need a set top box now,but I can't tape any of the HD channels on my old Video come DVD player so I guess I have to buy a new recorder now ,it never ends.

Frank can I buy any DVD cd combo or does it have to be HD,please advise me if you don't mind.

I have been doing a bit of chatting on Skype to the UK I love it ,I can talk and see my sister when ever I want to,I do miss her so.
I did get to see her grandchildren yesturday some for the first time.

The OH has just walked in will make him a cuppa and come back on feel like getting into my own tree this afternoon ,I have been a bit slack with it of late helping others.

Lovely to hear from you Robert ,keep that cave warm this winter.

Be back later.

Afternoon all

Nice to have us all back - including the Venerable Robert.

The Scream Cynthia was because we have have loads of Take That fans here & all screaching for Robbie - aaagh & I am working on the hot line - why do I do this to myself (because i need the cash)

Well 2 months time and Christmas will be over & done with.

We have a Sky HD box and i can work it wonderfully - OH is getting better but can't get the hang of recording - i am working on him.

Saw most of HP 6 yesterday - OH had a few grumbles - but the sleeping pills worked wonderfully well (more like the early morning GP which was a fiasco)

What do you think about Strictly come dancing then - Ann the high flyer - I loved her comment about decommisioning the Ark Royal & she is the new flying fortress. I thought she did really well this time. wonder what she will do next week - Jive or Argentine Tango - can't see her doing either really.

Haven't seen Downton Abbey yet & its the last Whitechapel tonight as well.

So quite a few things to catch up on (including the new Bones, Fringe, Haven, Series 8 NCIS) too many things at once.

Still not convinced with New Tricks though.

Well back to the real world.

Take care all

Everyone seems in fine fettle.......! Hot bloodied Scotsmen? Don't you find those kilts a touch chilly???

Frank.....I love it when you post a totally incomprehensible (to me) message and then end it with..........simples.....hahaha - as if!

Hiya Josie, I too love it when I can just play around on the computer for a while. In fact, I get withdrawal symptom if I am away for too long.....Oh dear....it must be serious.

Had a nice trip to Livepool today with OH and daughter and had lunch in the Anglican cathedral. Both that and the Catholic catherdral are well worth a visit.

OH was constantly amazed by the new building work going on. He was born and brought up in Liverpool but he says he could easily get lost there nowadays.

Later I enjoyed a very nice coffee frappacino - just thought Frank should know that I am not losing my touch!

Lovely to hear from so many of you. Love. Cx.

FRANK06

FRANK06 Report 25 Oct 2010 22:35

Hi Susan,

Here's some stuff I found online to try to answer your question without blowing our Cynthia's mind...........

BluRay recorder............

You have a High definition TV and you want to record High Definition TV programs as you did with your VCR then you will require a Blu Ray recorder which records to Blu Ray discs but both the recorder and the discs are still quite expensive...........New technology.

DVD Recorder.........
If you want to record and archive TV for long-term storage, or you want to share recordings with family and friends, a DVD recorder is a better option...........and cheaper.
However, you’ll only get two hours of good quality recording time per disc. You can extend the recording time using long-play settings to three or four hours, but image quality will suffer

Personal Video Recorder (PVR).......
If all you want to do is record TV programmes with minimal fuss for watching at a different time (time-shifting), we’d recommend avoiding DVD recorders altogether and opting for a PVR that records to an internal hard drive. They're simple to use, offer massive recording capacity and are very versatile.
They come with twin tuners allowing you to record one channel while watching another.
Also as your TV has it's own single tuner you would be able to watch TV and record two other channels.
They're not suitable for long-term archiving however so a separate DVD recorder would be required to record programs onto DVD

.If you like the idea of buying a DVD recorder but want massive amounts of recording time too, consider a DVD recorder with a built-in hard disk drive. These feature large internal hard disk drives like those you’d find on a PVR. Their storage capacities are huge – space to record more than 100 hours of programming is typical, and the largest can store 250 hours. You can also transfer any recording held onto a DVD for archiving purposes or for sharing recordings with friends.

However, combination DVD/hard disk recorders generally only have a single digital tuner. This means that you can't record two digital programmes at the same time and you can only watch one programme and record another if you also own a digital TV with its own tuner. They’re also generally more complicated to use than good standalone PVR.

So if both a PVR and a DVD recorder are required, we would recommend buying two separate devices unless space is an issue.

Thats about it, I would certainly recommend the PVR for simplicity of use.

As to your original question, it would have to be a DVD recorder, which if used with an HDMI cable rather than a scart cable (check that your TV has an HDMI connection) will usually upscale DVDs to near HD quality.

The only problem with using just a DVD recorder is that you only have one digital tuner on the TV so you would have to watch the same channel that you were recording.......that's why PVRs have twin tuners.

Cynthia, It's not often that anyone gets close up and personal with a Scotsman's chilly kilt ;)

Hi eveyone

Here I am!

Had physio today (Tuesday)

physio decided to try needling on my hip ......... this is NOT acupuncture

AFTER he had done it, he said that I would probably be sore tonight and tomorrow but it should then ease off ......... and he might consider doing it again next visit (3 weeks time).

hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Needling is an acupuncture-type needle pushed into a knot of muscle fibres in an attempt to get them to fire off and then relax

had lunch out as usual (sushi), bought choccies also as usual, and came straight home

Home in even more of a mess than it was ..... the cabinets were delivered this morning

Have cabinets in the middle of the living room, drawers on the sofa. Cabinets semi in place in the kitchen. More drawers in the study

OH phoned re the countertops. "Oh, sorry there's been a delay, they won't be in until at least November 4"

aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhhhh

Note from OH on counter when I came home ...... daughter asked yesterday if he could pick up her husband's degree from the downtown campus of the university.

M is not going to attend the degree ceremony, and apparently they did not get what they thought satisfactory information on how well the degree would be "packaged" for going by the post.

M I think was panicking about getting a damaged degree certificate.

They were told that it could be picked up at any campus, information would be sent to that campus from the main one by email and the degree just printed off. (Actually that doesn't make sense, because degrees are usually printed on special papers etc)

OH got a pdf with a signed letter from M giving permission for "father-in-law" to pick up degree.

OH goes downtown specially this afternoon to pick it up ............ only to be told "you can't, we don't have it. They didn't ask for it to be picked up downtown". That was the note he left for me!

so he had to come home empty handed

M has to send letter or email to the main campus and ask for degree to be made available at the downtown campus.

Downtown campus say they'll have it about a week or so after that letter has been received.

On the way home, OH planned to stop by the dentist's office where he was yesterday ....... he left his temporary bridge with its 2 teeth there.

Don't know whether he did ................... he won't be home until some time between 7 and 10 pm

........ it's the orchestra rehearsal for the next student opera production. Dress rehearsals next Monday and Tuesday. Performances next Thursday through Sunday

I'm tired!!!!!

Take care

Hi Everyone

Frank thankyou for all that trouble you went for me ,it is very much appreciated.

Tell me can you buy a DVD and VHS combo that tapes HD.
I have a lot of movies on tapes that I still like to play and it would be so sad if I could not use them anymore.
We seem to live in a throw away world these days such a waste to throw away something that works perfecly well.

Anne I was pleased to hear about Robbie Williams gettting back to Take That ,I really liked there music.
I don't think the dau is none to pleased she love Robbie Williams just the way he is,she always goes to see him when he comes to OZ.

Sylvia
I really feel for you with your reno's going on ,I always like thing in its place but I am painting at the moment and I have everything everywhere ,driveing me nuts but I have to get into it don't want to be doing this in Summer.
Doing the main bedroom a nice mint green, lovely cool colour.
I also like the smell of new paint.

We are expecting rain this afternoon so I have put some fertiliser on the front lawn, trying to save the water for Summer.
They tell us we are in for a lot of Cyclones this year, they mainly hit at the top of Oz but they have been known to come down the west coast something to do with the warm water in the Indian Ocean for this time of the year.

Well better start to think of cooking Dinner, don't know what to have tonight.
Check back later.

Hi Everyone

I don't know what is happening with our neck of the wood with earthquakes and tidlewaves .

Indonesia seems to be getting it all ,I feel so sorry for the people there and they are telling us to watch out for Cyclones this year to be worse that ever.
I think I would be safer back in the Uk.

Very quiet on here today, the weekend is nearly upon us again still I have plenty to do before Summer hits.

The OH has been busy with lots of work coming in so I guess he is going to have a long hot Summer.

Still we can do with the extra money for my trip back to the Uk and if I can afford it to the US and Canada,I have rellies in Canada too.

Going to make myself a nice drink now and put my feet up,we have changed our Games room into a cinema room it looks really nice and I think it will get used more.

Have to try to get the pool table legs marks out of the Carpet though it was a slate top and very heavy so I have four round marks to try to revive and Ideas .

Poor Sylvia.....do hope you get straight soon. I hate being messed up by workmen for too long, but the finished result will be worth the hassle. Hang in there!

Sue.....whatever is happening with your weather? I feel really sorry for those people in Indonesia - they are being hit every which way with so many disasters. I also wonder what is happening to the orang utans out there - I love those wonderful animals and have one sitting on my bed.

Carpet flattened?.....apparently, an ice cube left overnight will lift the pile. Let me know if it works!

Went with daughter to a garden centre yesterday. The Christmas decorations are all out which is quite dispiriting! Lots of trees, glitter and glitz - non of it cheap.
I did, however, manager to spot a couple of unusual things for presents so that was useful.

Had a little trip into town this morning to pick up OH's spare specs. Managed to grab a couple of vouchers for gifts for Christmas too.

Hoping to have a relaxed afternoon, so going for a browse around.

Take care everyone. Love. Cx.

Here's an odd one from Genes Reunited.

If you Google free Scottish records, it brings up the following sponsored links ........

Scotland Birth Records
www.GenesReunited.co.uk
Find Scottish certified birth certificates online - Try for free

........but we all know that GR do not carry Scottish certificates.

When I e-mailed them to point this out, I received a long spiel about how I can still search the military records for scottish deaths........... etc

They are passing this little faux pas on to their marketing dept who will probably be quite pleased that Google are sending all this extra business in their direction.

Just think of all the poor souls who are excitedly puting their cash down on Platinum deals only to find nothing..........

Tabitha Report 29 Oct 2010 18:13

Sylvia - hope things get back to normal soon - just think when its all done you will have a fantastic kitchen - always a bright side to look forward to.

Did the ice cube work Sue? We just have very weird weather here all round - a few days ago it was so warm people were sitting on the beach at the end of October (Big photo in the paper) next day the Artic blast arrived & we were all in scarves & winter woollies - Next day then hail stones & loads of rain - very very weird weather. Take this morning it was still really dark at 7am when I went in to work.

Take That went on sale at 9am (sold out by 9:10) and the Ticketmaster servers crashed - bedlam at work we took over 550 calls in an hour. We were given free bacon rolls for breakfast. Came home worn out - OH had a nice long G & T with ice & lemon waiting for me & dinner in the oven - bliss.

Tomorrow I am in & working at 7am - no idea why now as we sold out of tickets by 10:30 this morning - still the extra few pennies come in handy.

I have a quandry - which FBG may be able to answer - or one of you other clever young things on this thread.

My Great Grand Father William John Smith - married Lily, on his marriage cert it states his father is "William John Smith"

Looked everywhere for a birth cert for WJS Jr with father as WJS Snr - no chance - checked census & states WJS Jr born Dover - whooopee - found a birth cert for a WJS right date, right place of birth - so sent off for cert - OH NO - father is Edward Smith - back to drawing board - still nothing.

A few years later (still no joy) along comes a long lost cousin - we have a discussion & he goes off (as he is retired now has time on his hands) so does some reasearch & finds the same things I did - but he believes it is the right person & that they made a mistake on the marriage cert.

Question - if they did make a mistake shouldn't they have had to make an amendment on the original record to say so. Would the cert still be legal with the incorrect parentage on it. Isn't it a falseified document, knowlingly putting the wrong name & not changing it.

Do we reckon he had a falling out with the family & didn't want him recorded - so no-one could find him?

I would love my new found cousin to be right but I just feel something niggling at me - I need proof - but don't know how to get it - without a time machine --------------aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh

And on that note - I have finished my G & T & am just going to start on my dinner.

Take care all - catch up on Sunday with you all
