Riley54 Report 16 Jun 2018 20:39

William Hollis married Mary Ann Ball and these were my Great Grandparents
Their daughter Rachel Hollis married Arthur Riley (my grandparents)

I have a print out for the 1891 census which shows William as being born in Wales as does the 1911 census however the 1901 census shows him as being born in Lancashire. All three printouts have the same children's names on but the 1911 census shows two entries for James Hollis for 1885 and 1886. Don't know why this could be.
My mum only told me about her mum Rachel having one sister Emily.
I don't have the names of William's parents or his date of birth so cannot send for the birth certificate.

I would appreciate your thoughts on whether this will be the same William Hollis in all three census'.
Thank you

If you look at the original of the 1911 census it says on there. One of the questions to be completed on the census form was - How many children were born alive to the marriage and at this point how many are still alive and how many have died.

You should always check the original document whenever you can but always be aware that mistakes do happen even there.

Using the site I highlighted earlier you should be able to find all of the births and then hopefully match them to deaths

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/

alviegal

alviegal Report 16 Jun 2018 21:19

If you look at the transcript of the 1911 census Dermot, there is a column that asks how many children born, another asks how many have died and another asks how many are still alive.
Another column asks how long the marriage has lasted but in this case, there is no figure entered.

Yes I see that now about the number of children born. I must admit I don't usually check the original document but I will now.

The name Mary Ann Ball was given to me by my Mum however she'd had a stroke and her memory was not brilliant.

Owen and Rachel Ball looks promising as the parents of Mary Ann

Original -
Parents names - Rachel Green - no Father named
under Trade or Profession column has Single Woman (one of the nicer terms to be found given the circumstances!)

So Mary Ann born as Green, so that was who she married as.

Given the short time between marriage and her birth Owen may well have been the Father but you can't tell for sure if he's not named on the BC. If he was her Father though I would have thought she would have named him on the MC unless she felt it may have opened up a can of worms?? But then she used Ball as her maiden name for the children's births !

greyghost

greyghost Report 17 Jun 2018 00:17

Using the GRO site posted for births and deaths to find the other 4 children born - all Mansfield RD
there are 8 names listed over the census' posted,
Emily 1880, John 1884, James 1886, Charles Hy 1888, Frank (Francis Edwin) 1890, Ada Mary Ann 1892, Rachel 1896, Lydia 1901

so 4 to find

Joseph 1894 died 1895 aged 0
Lucy Ellen b 1898 died 1899 aged 1
Owen b 1899 died 1899 aged 0

EDIT - there is also this one - located because he was baptised in 1882.
His birth was registered mmn Green

Name: Mother's Maiden Surname: Order:
HOLLIS, ROBERT GREEN Order
GRO Reference: 1882 J Quarter in MANSFIELD Volume 07B Page 57 Order

Name: Age at Death (in years): Order:
HOLLIS, ROBERT 2 Order
GRO Reference: 1884 J Quarter in MANSFIELD Volume 07B Page 36

and birth registered Liddie 1901 death as Lydia 1902 aged 0 (straddles a census )

That would make the 12 births and 5 deaths

MMN given as Green for George Wm - see below and Robert (she'd been born and married as Green) but for the rest she used Ball which is the name she had always been known as.

My theory is there was another birth (actually the first) as the first child showing on census is Emily b 1880, so a bit of a gap from the marriage in 3/1877 -

there is this birth
George William Hollis mmn Green 1878 died 1880 as George William Ball
EDIT - Yes they baptised a Geo. Wm in Tibshelf 7/6/1878

(James and Emma Carberry, witnesses at the wedding, also had a child baptised a month later)

So actually 13 births and 6 deaths ?

Sorry I've not been back on today,

Wow that's a brilliant amount of information. I only had some of the children's names but no partners information. other than Rachel Hollis (my grandmother) marrying Arthur Riley. My mum only talked about her mum having one sister Emily so there's not much to go on there.
I would appreciate any information on the children.

I notice that John Hollis was a widower is there anything on his first marriage,

I will look on the GRO site too. Thank you
