I am looking for help or info, can You help.
The above is my grand-father. I have details from his marriage certificate (1905) Devonport, Devonshire, (it was a separate Borough to Plymouth until 1914) telling me that he was born in Central City Colorado USA in 1881. I have assumed that my GGGrand father went there for the gold rush as on Herbert's marriage cert , he is noted as a miner and was called Edward . From that I found that he joined the 3rd Devon Regt in 1903.He was discharged a month later, unfit. My father was born in 1911 and he is recorded on the birth certificate. My father's sister was born in 1914, but there is no mention of his name. I find no record of him in the armed forces. That was the last record that I could find of him. My Grand-mother died in 1917. The only death in the UK that I can find that might match is a Herbert Matthew Bennett who was born in 1881 and died in Dovercourt, Harwich, Essex in 1957/9?. My father whom has been dead this last 34 years 1981 never mentioned him.

On his Army record his occupation is given as Moulder; the Herbert in the 1901 that PricklyHolly posted is an Iron Foundry worker - similar occupation.

The Army record also says that he had served a 4 year apprenticeship at Bartle & Sons, Cam or Carn Brea?; there is a date, March '98, but it isn't clear whether that is when he started or finished the apprenticeship.

WE need a bit more info from Anthony.

Was Herbert in the millitary or Edward?? I can't find millitary records on Ancestry that someone else posted.

Potty

Potty Report 14 Feb 2015 12:46

If the Army record is for the correct Herbert, he was discharged as medically unfit after only 49 days service so possibly his medical condition prevented him from working in a Foundry. On the service record, there is a notation "Exeter, 25/08/13" but not indication of to what it refers.
