Anthony I think your father's sister has a third given name 'K' which would suggest perhaps that Mr Kitts was her father

given the location I expect Mr Kitts was the Walter born 1881 who married in 1913 and died in 1954

Leah's death in 1917 is registered under both surnames Bennett and Ford

The couple seem to have divorced

J 77/1211/6852

Type: Husband's petition for divorce [HD].

Maybe the birth in 1914 wasn't Herberts child?

The Army Record is on FMP - it only 3 pages, one of which is blank. POB given as Central City, Colorado. No next of kin given. I wonder if there is any significance in the 1913 date seeing as how he seems to disappear before the 1914 birth.

From Wikipedia

Central City is a home rule municipality in Clear Creek and Gilpin counties in the U.S. state of Colorado, and the county seat of Gilpin County.

It was a centre for the Gold Rush, so both the Edwards posted in the 1885 USA are in the right place.

Whoops! Just noticed that the Edward with wife Mary is from the 1880 census not the 1885.

I've sent a PM letting Anthony know how to get back/answer on his thread :-)

Potty

Potty Report 14 Feb 2015 12:46

If the Army record is for the correct Herbert, he was discharged as medically unfit after only 49 days service so possibly his medical condition prevented him from working in a Foundry. On the service record, there is a notation "Exeter, 25/08/13" but not indication of to what it refers.

Was Herbert in the millitary or Edward?? I can't find millitary records on Ancestry that someone else posted.

The Army record also says that he had served a 4 year apprenticeship at Bartle & Sons, Cam or Carn Brea?; there is a date, March '98, but it isn't clear whether that is when he started or finished the apprenticeship.

Who registered her death?

Potty

On his Army record his occupation is given as Moulder; the Herbert in the 1901 that PricklyHolly posted is an Iron Foundry worker - similar occupation.
