Does anyone know if there is a family link between the Tangyes and the Trevithicks? Both families are from Illogan in Cornwall and both were involved in engineering, especially relating to Cornish mining.

Most of the male Tangyes, down to the present day, have Trevithick as one of their forenames which suggests more than a professional link between the families.

Grateful for any help with this.

There is a plaque on the wall on the corner of Margaret Street in Birmingham City Centre commemmorating Richard Tangye.
He was something like the City engineer or chief architect (CanĀ“t remember exactly what). It always interested me because I wondered if he was related to the Cornish Tangye
Was it Derek Tangye who wrote the books about cats in Cornwall? I believe he was related to the Birmingham Tangyes.

It definitely is his baptism.....it's on the IGI

There was an engineering firm by the name of Tangye in the Birmingham/Smethwick area around 1900. I have a long service medal for one of my wifes forebears dated about 1909.

Hello Joanna and welcome to the Community Boards.

There is, indeed, a lot of information on the above families on Google and some of it is very interesting too.

I read that Sir Richard Tangye was inspired by a fellow countryman - the neglected genius Richard Trevithick. It may be that Sir Richard named one of his children after his friend and the tradition continued down the line.

I will let Joanne know that she has replies to her query.... :-) :-)

Sir Richard Tangye was born 1833 (per Wikipedia, and as Chris has said), and he already had the middle name Trevithick himself - so nothing to with Richard Trevithick.
