Thank you to everyone who has replied to this thread and those who suggested that I should research the family myself are quite correct - that would probably provide the information if it exists. But this is not a family history inquiry - I'm doing some research on the Tangye engineering firm in Birmingham and I thought it would add to the interest if I could mention a family connection with Richard Trevithick, as both he and the Tangyes came from Illogan. But at best it would make a single sentence in my report so I won't be doing the family research required to establish that. I had hoped, as a long shot, that someone might be already researching both families and could confirm the connection but as that isn't the case I will simply note the inclusion of Trevithick's name in use in the Tangye family.
Thanks again to everyone who replied.

Thanks for that Cassie
My memory tends to be a bit fuzzy these days. I loved his books & my brother & sister in law moved from Birmingham in 1996 to live very near to Minack. We are all cat lovers which is why the books were so appealing.

Derek Alan Trevithick Tangye (29 February 1912 – 26 October 1996) was a British author who lived in Cornwall for nearly fifty years. He wrote 19 books which became known as 'The Minack Chronicles', about life on a clifftop daffodil farm in the far west of Cornwall, and yes he wrote about cats, seagulls etc. He had been a newspaper columnist & during the war worked for MI5. His brother Nigel Tangye was also an author. They were grandsons of the engineer Richard Tangye.

Ah, well, I know Wiki's not foolproof!

In that case you're probably right, Cynthia.

Cynthia Report 16 Jan 2014 22:19

Hmmm. but he doesn't seem to have been baptised with that middle name - despite what Wiki may say.

So possibly all to do with Richard Trevithick. :-S

ArgyllGran Report 16 Jan 2014 16:34

Sir Richard Tangye was born 1833 (per Wikipedia, and as Chris has said), and he already had the middle name Trevithick himself - so nothing to with Richard Trevithick.

Hello Joanna and welcome to the Community Boards.

There is, indeed, a lot of information on the above families on Google and some of it is very interesting too.

I read that Sir Richard Tangye was inspired by a fellow countryman - the neglected genius Richard Trevithick. It may be that Sir Richard named one of his children after his friend and the tradition continued down the line.

I will let Joanne know that she has replies to her query.... :-) :-)

There was an engineering firm by the name of Tangye in the Birmingham/Smethwick area around 1900. I have a long service medal for one of my wifes forebears dated about 1909.

There is a plaque on the wall on the corner of Margaret Street in Birmingham City Centre commemmorating Richard Tangye.
He was something like the City engineer or chief architect (Can´t remember exactly what). It always interested me because I wondered if he was related to the Cornish Tangye
Was it Derek Tangye who wrote the books about cats in Cornwall? I believe he was related to the Birmingham Tangyes.
