I am trying to find more about Henrietta Teresa Hurley, 1st wife of my gt gt grandfather Richard Oswin. They were married at St Clement Danes, London on 23 Dec 1844, and although both claimed to be of full age he was 20 and she was only 17. IGI has her born 1828 in St Clement Danes parish. Marriage certificate says her father was Charles Hurley, attorney and that she was living at 17 Arundel St, London. Witnesses were N.G.Hurley and E.L.Hurley. She appears to have gone to India in 1856, but I've no idea when she came back. She died 14 June 1891 in the Middlesex Hospital, death notified by sister E Hurley of the same address. I'd be grateful for anything about this family, and especially when Henrietta came back to England. Thanks.

Charles Logan Hurley would be the right sort of date. Shame the marriage cert doesn't give a middle name.

Still wondering where Henrietta Oswin nee Hurley went after the 1851 census. Could she have gone abroad somewhere other than India? Her husband Richard appears to have sometimes sailed to Australia - he was steward on a steam ship - while his second (bigamous) wife and daughter were living in Southampton. I'm assuming ot would have been easier for him to maintain two households if one of them was abroad! And Henrietta clearly thought she was his widow, as that's what appears on her death certificate in 1891. Any help gratefully received. Thanks.

Have you tried the Incoming Passengers list on Ancestry to see if her return to England shows up there?

What evidence do you have that she went to India in 1856?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 22 Oct 2012 12:34

As she lied about her age when she married, perhaps she also lied about who her father was?

not holding out much hope, but posting this as she refers to Arundel Street, Strand as her birthplace!

The India suggestion came from a cousin who did research back in the 1970s and 80s, and then someone found a Mrs Oswin on an 1856 passenger list from Bombay to Calcutta (if I remember rightly.) But another Oswin descendant thinks this is his Mrs Oswin, and not mine! Which is why I'm wondering if she went somewhere else.

The Henrietta Hanley is an interesting thought. Richard didn't actually die until 1873, but maybe he got someone to tell Henrietta he was dead so she thought she was a widow. Hmm.

Re Passenger lists, I'm not signed up to Ancestry, but am beginning to think maybe I should be!

Though her death certificate says Henrietta Oswin. But presumably she could have reverted to her maiden name for a while and then gone back to Oswin. Or her sister could just have registered her as Oswin even though she had stopped using the name. All sorts of possibilities!

Thanks very much for this idea anyway - gives me something to work on.

I'm off to do some gardening now so I'm not ignoring you if you post again! I'll check again later.

Thanks Chris - I've got the marriage (and the certificate), have got Henrietta in 1851 (in London, Richard not with her - maybe at sea) and then I've got her death certificate in 1891. But she vanishes in between.

In the meantime Richard Oswin had a child, Louisa Ann Oswin (my great grandmother) with Ann Bongard, born in 1855 in Southampton, and married Ann bigamously in Greenwich in 1866. He was a steward on a steam ship so could presumably explain his absences to both wives if he needed to! Don't know if he abandoned Henrietta totally or if he maintained both marriages. I suspect his parents knew nothing about Henrietta, although I can't prove that.

"death notified by sister E Hurley of the same address".

What was that address?

Have you found the sister on 1891 census?

Linda

Linda Report 22 Oct 2012 20:02

The address on the death certificate is 54 Exeter Street, Marylebone. I'm not sure now if I looked for her sister and failed to find her, or if I didn't actually look. I'll look for her now!

Thanks for checking the passenger lists - useful. The India idea may be due to a misunderstanding on the part of my cousin who did the family tree, so maybe Henrietta didn't leave the country at all.

That must be them in 1891 - well done and many thanks. I've been trying various permutations of E Hurley but hadn't got to Horley yet!

1851 - I'd got this but probably ought to try and check out the nephew and see where that leads.

Thanks very much everyone. Definitely some progress! :-)
