Hi Nesta I'm even later than Colin (I've been away), but I echo his thanks for looking up my unusual names on the electoral roll; they must all have emigrated! Helen

Minnehik

Has anyone tried typing their surname in the search box on Google? My surname was a transcription of the Geman spelling into French and we believed that no one else could have that name. I typed it in and came up with HUNDREDS. Unfortunately I found that this is the name of a place and just about every state in the US has a place of that name..what I got was all the names in the grave yards in each of the towns. Mind boggling. You find some interesting people in the search results though. I typed in the German spelling and came up with a univeristy in Ohio which had all the books written by my husband's grandfather which are in the archives there. He was a missionary in South Africa and the books were in their African studies library.

Maud

Maud Report 12 Mar 2004 14:30

Hi, Do not think there are unique surnames in my tree, but it causes problems with the many variations of my mother`s side, she was Gagan, but the name was changed when her faher was sent from a workhouse to Canada, his name was originally Geoghan, but going a little further back, the name was Geoghegan, I now have discovered that going back to the early times in Ireland (where it originated) it was MacGeogehegan!!! so it all makes for confusion as to what particular name to research! apparently there are many variations on this particular name. Also, problems can be caused by our ancestors inability to read, my gt grandmother could not read, so her maiden name has been sometimes recorded (correctly) as PaDDison and other times as PaTTison, I just wonder what her name sounded like when she spoke!!! Maud Jarvis

I have the surname DUSOLEI. I think it's evolved from DU SOLEIL. Other variant is DUSOLIE. Try researching that. It's died out here in the UK now, and no one is researching it but me!! Chloe
