Has anyone mentioned Pishill in Oxfordshire? When I was younger we used to pass through Thanington Without on the way to Canterbury. We reckoned it was referring to the streetlights. Richard

Then there is Inch Roundwood Longwood Killmacud (KILL MA CUD) Killamuck (Kill A Muck) Killtiernan (Kill Tiernan) Stepaside (Step A Side) Stillorgan (Still Organ) Hollywood Boghall Sallynoggin Can't think of more at the moment but I am sure there is. In Bristol there is a Pudding Pie Lane and Catbrain Hill Also in Gloucestershire there is Upper Cam and Lower Cam, and to get from Upper to Lower you go uphill. I seem to remember seeing a signpost with both Scotland and Ireland on it.

David - oh, no, you mean I got it wrong all this time, it wasnt Boggart Hole Clough but Boggart OLD Clough, oh God you have ruined my childhood memories, no wonder everyone got annoyed with me for laughing, they must have thought I was mental! I was born in Blackley, so know about that pronunciation. We moved to Darwen in Lancs and then to Scotland. On my first day at new school in Scotland I was surrounded by kids wanting to know what Australia was like.

Actually, when I was in North Wales I suddenly realised that the Welsh for Slow Down is very similar to the noise I make when I find something which impedes my speedy progress along the Queen's Highways.

This type of thread is the bee's knees. A long time ago while in Little Aden, I learnt that the next village was called Barefuqum, out of bounds to all military, but an interesting name. In Japan there is Fukuoka and Fukutu, wonderful names, but best of all somewhere in Kent on a road joining M2 and M20, I have seen signs for "No Ucking U-turns" gawd only knows what that means, Derek in France

Near Hereford, there is a sign to Ruckhall which is often defaced (using a small amount of white paint).

A few years ago we stayed in a place in Skye called Peiness. My husband got some funny looks asking directions to (as he pronounced it) PENIS ! Apparently it's pronounced PINESS. Another that makes me laugh (shouldn't really) is the sign for a crematorium here in Edinburgh, which has right next to it another for a Body Repair Shop! Christine

My fave was Lower Piddle ..... By the way re Splott goes back at least as far as the 15th century and consisted mainly of two farms, called the Upper and Lower Splott, situate between Roath Village and the sea. Shirley Bassey was born there (but a bit later) ... I used to live near the Hog's Back - I didn't know he'd been away. Annie
