AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 6 Oct 2004 16:35

Difficult to shorten my name, have had it lengthened to Annie before now and Tony used to call me Angie in our youth. Having said that, I would hate to hear Tony called Anthony. My daughter is Lynda and is known by most people as Lynne, her husband is Jonathan known as Jon, although we don't always shorten it. Stephen our son we never shorten but his friends do, Judith his wife is Jay to all of us, James (Grandson) is James or Jamie), Sophie is Sophie. the three older Grandsons -Christopher, we have only just started calling him Chris because all his friends do and he seems to prefer it, Jeremy is Jeremy Or (confusingly) Jay, Gregory we sometimes shorten to Greg, unless he is in trouble!! My sister is Rosemary and we never shorten it. I always call you Diana, Diana, I usually try and use the name people sign as. Ann glos

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 6 Oct 2004 18:27

My mother and relatives always call me by my full name but most friends of more recent years tend to call me Gwen, or Gwyn, as my husband does, which Mum doesn't really like as she says it's a man's name. Before I married I tended to be called by my full name but 'Boy you should have seen the spellings! I really don't mind which of these names people use.

CATHKIN

CATHKIN Report 6 Oct 2004 18:41

My name always gets shortened -ROSALYN to Ros or Roz which I detest.I called my daughter RONA without a h so it would be easy to spell. I like my name because it`s not very common but I did find someone on GR with the same names as me before marriage-ROSALYN RATTRAY-how unusual is that? Ros

An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 6 Oct 2004 21:39

My youngest daughter is called Naomi - nice old-fashioned biblical name. Gosh, would you be surprised at A. the number of people who have never heard it before and B. the number of people who cant spell it, the latest being her Bank who insist on calling her Maomi. She finally got through to someone who dutifully changed her name on the records - now shes Maoni! Im a Marjorie, dont mind anyone shortening that, just wish they would, rather than calling me Margaret, or as one woman I work with calls me - Maureen. As we have worked together for over ten years, its gone a bit past the point where I can correct her.

Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256

Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 6 Oct 2004 22:54

Mum called me Marion so that it couldn't be shortened - so of course I get called Mal (loathe that one) or Maz. Others just call me Marion. Don't particularly like my name, but HATE it being spelt wrong. Get called so many different things - Marian, Marilyn, Miriam, Maryanne, Maureen grrrrrrrr. Marjorie - I worked with a dippy moo for 6 months who still insisted on calling me Maureen. Gave up in the end. Daughter is Charlotte Louise - we call her Looby-loos or just Lubes. Son is James but has always been Jamie. He can choose his fave when he is older. Hubby is Andrew - his family always call him that, but everyone else calls him Andy. Maz. XX

Unknown

Unknown Report 6 Oct 2004 23:11

I'm Mandy, not Amanda, my mum thought it would save people time by calling me the shortened version straightaway! But I REALLY hate being called 'Mand', although that doesn't happen often. My husband is called Marston (don't laugh) which never gets shortened and surprisingly, neither does our son's name, Jordan.

MaggyfromWestYorkshire

MaggyfromWestYorkshire Report 7 Oct 2004 00:23

I was christened Margaret and would love people to shorten it! Started spelling it Maggy with a y when I was a teenager, to be different, and still spell it like that now. People will insist on spelling it with ie at the end! Maggy

Maggie

Maggie Report 7 Oct 2004 19:32

Hi Diane I was named after my Gran - Margaret and it was drummed into me by my Mum that that was my name and it should not be shortened - I liked Maggie but kept insisting people use Margaret until I got my Gran's birth certificate to find she'd been named Maggie not Margaret so hence the shortening of my name!

Bob

Bob Report 7 Oct 2004 20:35

Only person who calls me Robert is my mum. My wife and her mother are both Maureens but MIL was always called Molly and wife is Mo Bob

Sue

Sue Report 7 Oct 2004 22:35

I have been Sue to most people since I left school many moons ago. My Grandad was the only one allowed to call me Susie, although my Mum always did if she wanted something! If anyone called me Susan I knew I was in trouble! Dad, who was Canadian, called me Sooze. Now I'm Grandma Sue to anyone under the age of 12 LOL Husband is Douglas, but known as Doug or Dougal to all except his Mum! Kids are Matthew known as Matt, Mattie-baby or Mattie-poos (he'll love me for that!) Kathryn, but always Katie from birth or Kitty to her Irish Grandmother-in-law. Gemma known as Gemmy Lou (2nd name Louise) James known as Jay or Jimbo when he was younger, but NEVER Jim or Jimmy! One grandaughter is Emma but known as Emmy Lou (even though she doesn't have the name Louise) or Emms. Abigail known as Abbie from birth, but called Abbs by her friends! Owen, but O to his friends and Rebecca called Bec, Becks, Becky or Becca. I'm sure someone will call her Rebs now she's at High school! My brother Iain was known as Eenie Weenie and called me Disna as he couldn't say Susan! Such thought we put into choosing our children's names and they are either shortened or lengthened or, worse still, given nicknames! LOL Sue
