I try never to shorten anyones names without them telling me too, but I have noticed that nearly everyone is in the habit of doing it.... at work people call me D, on here people call me Di (which sounds like a request to me) pmsl!! Is this something that goes back years or are we just getting lazy?

I never shorten names myself but it is funny how you get people who just do it without asking if it's ok. I had several people call me Di, and I don't like it, for obvious reasons. Some names are ok shortened. But others no. My daughter is called Sophie and several people will call her Soph which to me is silly. My other daughter is Gemma and most people call her Gem which is I think fine. There that's off my chest! Dianex

My husband's niece had the opposite problem, she's called Jo but teachers would insist on calling her Joanne. she was labelled as cheeky for correcting them. Sue

Diana, I always call you Diana as that's what you call yourself. Like yourself I wouldn't shorten someone's name unless I knew thats what they liked. Grwing up as a Paul, which you can't really shorten, just extend (yes yes, I've had all the Paula jokes a million times before), I always prefer names that you can shorten - thats why my son's called Benjamin.

A friend of mine insists on calling everyone by their initial.... so Paul you'd be P and I am D and she is T, her husband is M and their daughter is m....

Nicola

Nicola Report 6 Oct 2004 15:42

Sorry to say this Diana but I would absolutely hate your friend for the initial calling for your name!!!!

my name is Nichola with a "h", it bugs me when people dont take the time out to notice, i got that bad about it when i was younger at scholl people use to put in my christmas cards " to nichola with a "h" ", LOL. also im with Nicola Callaghan on this one, i hate being called nikki, nicky, nickie, etc, dont like it at all, cant stand it, when people say it to me, i just dont here them,LOL. dont mind nic when on msn chatting etc as its quicker to write, apart from that its nichola.LOL.
