Our local Pie and Mash was in Exmouth Market, Clerkenwell. My mum used to sit my sister and I in there while she did the shopping on Friday evening. There was an eel stall right outside the shop with all the live eels writhing about in a big barrel. The stallholder used to stick his hand in the writhing mass pull out an eel and chop its head off and then chop the whole thing up into pieces...gruesome! Didn't put me off though...!!! I used to love a bowl of HOT eels...not fond of the jellied type! My sister loved the pie, mash and liquor, she still does! YUK! Dee x |

I know this is an old thread that i posted in November but i have just found out where father-in-law worked and was wondering if it is still there,i dont expect so but it is wortha try . The shop was in Rotherhithe High Street next to the tunnel and across the road was a pub called The Blue Lion . Anyone remember ? i am talking about just after the war . Val |

I lived in High wycombe for years and used to visit London on a regular basis,Shepards Bush ,Bermonsey ,Soho ,and iv'e never seen a pie and mash shop ,never mind eating in one.I feel as though i have missed out cause the things that were on sale sound lovely.Oh well i suppose i will have to make do with fish and chips ,and the usual weekly chinese take away.Fred.ptfg. |

Hi Fred Got your e-mail glad you are going along fine. Pie and Mash is wonderful most Londoners where brought up on it years ago as it was a cheap meal and still is today . I make my own but not quite the same.I live in Kent and we do have a good one on the coast at Dymchurch,so we go down there a couple of times a month or more often in the summer. yummy Val x |

Fred I am lazy and use the parsley sause mix and add a little extra fresh pasley and use just a 1/4 milk and the rest water. Serve with Mash Potato and steak pie and plenty of vinegar. If you go into ask Jeeves the real recipe is on there. Try it it,s not to everybodies taste . Val x |
