As most of you on here probably know, my Grandad passed away on Sunday. The funeral is next Tuesday. Grandad was a sub-mariner during WW2. One of his favourite stories he liked to tell was how the submarine he was on helped to land the Cockleshell Heroes. He was also awarded the Burma Star. His friends from the Sub-mariners Club and Burma Star Association have been in touch and we will now have standard bearers leading the cortege, a Union Jack draped over the coffin, a reading from each of the assciations and the Last Post will be sounded. As we leave the crematorium they will play A Life on the Ocean Wave. A fitting farewell I think for a brave and wonderful man. Tears of pride are welling in my eyes as I type! Jeanette x

That will be very fitting Jeanette, we had the 'Last Post' at Grandads funeral, one snowy January, and it was so moving in the churchyard... shall certainly be thinking of you.

Hi Lisa I just asked my Mum where he was based and she wasn't too sure. She did know he was one of very few who joined up from Lowestoft of all places. Apparently his crew mates tended not to believe this as it was not common practise to join up there. But he had a different 'number' to those who had joined up in Portsmouth. Mum also said she thinks there might have been some connection with Devonport/Davenport. I am going to have a look on the cwwg site to see if I can get his records. Jeanette x

Oh Jeanette. So sorry to hear that.. I bet it was interesting listening to him tell you those stories. How proud you must be.. My dad was in the Navy and how I wish we knew that they could have helped us. he was scatterd in the sea. and they would have taken us out on a boat ... it's a shame that you don't know these things at the time. Will be thinking of you on Tuesday Love Pat

Pat It had never occurred to us to do this. Apparently they can't approach you, you have to approach them and ask. Fortuntaley my Mum's cousin is the chairman of the sub-mariners club and he called as a family member and sounded us out! Jeanette x
