This woman on the 1939 Register had her surname changed twice. I couldn't find a marriage anywhere for the last name change. :-0

LondonBelle

LondonBelle Report 25 Jul 2024 19:34

It had the code NR230 against it. On checking it says NR230 is for a change of name other than marriage :-S

On further looking I found

Historically, many people preferred not to draw attention to their change of name. When, for example, divorce was more difficult, some people simply took their new partner’s name to allow them to appear married, and to make any children appear legitimate.

She had been married before but I couldn't find a divorce, so NR230 answered the question. She had four children with this man she hadn't married
:-D

The thing was it had been changed on the 1939 Register but there was no marriage.....the children were all registered as if they had been married :-0 If I hadn't found out about NR230 I would still be scratching me head :-D :-D
