Done it again!

I should never be left alone to order anything on a computer!

Having searched for a long time, I finally found a place that was once more stocking sago. The crop must have finally recovered from the tsunami.

It was a wholefood supplier and delivery was something like a fiver unless you took advantage of their special offer and sent them an order over twenty pounds in which case it was free.

Wanting the sago and preferring to have food rather than pay for delivery, I ordered some other things, including two grades of oatmeal because a little bit might come in handy and I do have a book with oatmeal recipes in it.

I don't know what I did but the package came yesterday, containing the sago I had craved, the other things I had wanted and no less than six kilos of bloody oatmeal!

It is not even all medium or fine oatmeal either. One kilo of medium and five, yes five kilos, of pinhead oatmeal, that big ever so crunchy stuff!

Last night I made some treacle farls (had to type that one carefully!) and some biscuits. OH is getting a new tin of treacle to make some parkin, but what about the other five kilos?

I don't have anything to top with crumble at the moment, Von, but it is a good idea.

Get my big vat out eh?

Lol.
It won't be long until Seville oranges are available. I'm sure you could think of a recipe to include some of them and oatmeal ?

Like a complete breakfast at one go.

Yes, I guess so.

What about oatmeal pancakes?
You could serve them sweet or savoury.

Cats can eat oats - occasionally, as a treat.

A savoury crumble topping?

Just remembered...
My mother-in-law used to make skirlie and very tasty it was too.
Not sure of her recipe, but there are some suggestions online.
You could combine some of that with potatoes to make potato cakes for a change.

maggiewinchester Report 16 Dec 2020 13:59

You could make Oat flour bread.
Put the oats in burgers.
Make a face pack.

Put it out for Santa's reindeers when they deliver all your pressies at Christmas?

nameslessone

Can you make oat milk with it?

Sharron

Sharron Report 16 Dec 2020 14:43

Santa is sleeping in my bed again this year anyway and I don't really have any use for oat milk.

Actually, when we first went into lockdown, I got in a big bag of porridge oats and a bag of dates to make oat milk in case we couldn't get fresh milk so I still have a tidy few porridge oats and plenty of dates as well.

Yus, I make wholemeal crumbles and add plenty of scotch oats to the mix. Would the birds like some of your oats?

Sharron

Sharron Report 16 Dec 2020 21:28

I have to be persuaded to make crumble because I don't like it. Bit dubious about putty things out for the birds because I have seen too many rats enjoying the feast.

So I found a recipe on-line for pinhead oatmeal parkin. It looked like quite large portions of ingredients but who am I to argue? It did use up a few things though.

I didn't have enough treacle but there was a tin of golden syrup in the cupboard that had solidified. That went in along with that molasses sugar I have had in the cupboard since I made the 2012 Christmas cake which made up for the rest of the treacle and my not having that other dark brown sugar, the name of which escapes me.

Anyway, we now have two big parkins which were cooked last night and have already improved somewhat by becoming stickier.

There is still plenty of coarse oatmeal though.
