Tawny Report 27 Mar 2020 11:37

Mr Owl had some sad news today. His beloved grandmother who has been a massive influence on his life is terminally ill and is being moved to a hospice.

Grandma lives in Windsor and we live in Edinburgh but he would like to say a final goodbye. Can we justify the journey during the travel ban.

I think you might have a valid reason for travel and I can quite understand that he would want to see his grandmother, however it may be that the hospice is limiting visitors, so I would check first.
I hope he is able to visit, if it will give them comfort to see each other.

These are difficult times and we cannot always do what we would wish. A very dear friend has died here and it will hurt not being able to go to her funeral, which needs to be close family only.

Sorry to read that Tawny. I think you would be better asking a reliable source.

I doubt very much they would let you in Tawny because of all the vulnerable people in there. It is so sad to hear this news <3

Thank you Barbra, Island, LaGooner and Gwyn. We will check once she’s in the hospice before Mr Owl does anything too quickly.

Mr Owl will phone 111 to check as well as the hospice before we do anything. His birth dad died of cancer when Mr Owl was 6 months old and his aunt is immunocompromised so there is no one else.

Mr Owl went to his grandparents house every Sunday growing up and they took him on holiday too.

Such sad news Tawny I am so sorry for your OH but there was a hospice on TV the other night (in this area) and visitors were not allowed. The staff and patients are so vulnerable. He will be sad at not being able to see her but he should rest assured that she will be very well looked after, all hospices have lovely staff. I know that is not much consolation but I also think police are stopping motorists all over England to check if their journey is necessary and sending them home if it is not. <3

as sad as it is and so very sorry, but think of the larger picture.

So from home to Windsor,,,,,,toilet stops will need to be made,,,,,,,,,,where? and was used by,,,,,,,, whom? last cleaned ?-------the hospice staff and their families could be compromised.

Perhaps you could ring the hospice and ask their advice.

My heart goes out to you both and all the family

Oh Tawny, that is such a long way. I only live 40-60 minutes away and would have to think hard before I went.

My BIL died in a hospice recently. They were wonderful. Always spoke to him and asked him questions even when he was out of it.

They were brilliant at passing messages backwards and forwards. All the staff were fantastic and I’m sure the one in Windsor will be as good.

The funniest thing was when my BIL was offered alternative treatments. He said it was fine, he saw a therapist. Had to explain they meant aromatherapy, reflexology and other things. He had the aromatherapy several times and she bought in things to sniff.

Also bear in mind that the virus numbers in that area are rising. There are a lot of London commuters living around there.

Just remember that they will make her very comfortable. It will always be harder for the family.

All the best..

Thank you Jem and nameslessone.

We have been told we can visit when grandma is at her last so we’ll see what stage the world is at then. Grandma’s flat is rented in sheltered housing so we will also need to speak to them and see if we can pay an extra month to allow us to get things sorted. Hopefully in the current climate they will be amenable to that.
