What are peoples thoughts on a website where you could search for photos of relatives, and places connected with said person?

Place of education, work, religion and burrial

Thank you in advance for your thoughts

A good idea.
As family members die, 'stuff' tends to go to one side, so other members of the family end up with no photo's.

Very true Maggie, I have none from my Grandmother as a cousin took them all and just threw them away. If it can be done it would be a good idea Mark.

I have no picture of one of my grandmothers either.

Not that happy to be honest .................

People post photos of relations, ancestors, places etc etc on their trees on Ancestry. Unless the tree is made totally private, anyone can take those photos and claim them as their own.

Same happens to photos posted on FB on genealogy sites, people's pages, or open postings ............... photos stolen by anyone.

I'm willing to share what photos I have with people who are truly connected but not with Uncle Tom Cobley and all.

I certainly wouldn't be posting anything on such a site.

FWIW ...................... I currently have a friend on another site who is having a major discussion with someone else who believes that the photo my friend posted of herself as a baby is that other person as a baby. The debate is going nowhere, as the other person does not believe it, and now wants photos of the parents of the baby :-( :-S

Umm - but your avatar is you, and your grandmother.
I can copy that.

yep ............. but I am much more careful with many other photos that I have.

But I also have not put her name, and I am not on here under my name. I don't think I have ever identified any people in photos that I've posted on here other than by their relationship to me ("mother+, grandmother", OH's great grandmother" etc)

Presumably posting photos in a Gallery would mean identifying the people and places, with full names, dates, etc. Or they would be no good for helping anyone fill out their tree or gather photos of relations.

That's how photos appear on Ancestry, FB, and other sites.

That's true! :-D

I found a photo of my dad's stepdad on Ancestry - but then, later on, I also found photo's of him in newspapers.

On Ancestry I have found about 100 photo's of my ancestor's' some of the same person at a different age. I have seen other tree,s with my old photo's & old news papper's cutting taken from my tree of which I don,t mind. Anybody can find a name, but to put a photo to it makes a name into a person It you know what I mean

Sorry Mark, I’m with Sylvia on this. It might be OK if all the photos were of people known definitely to be deceased but I think it very likely that photos and information about living people will get on there too.

I have had a very recent experience of this. I have chosen not to join Facebook but I have been told that my photo is on someone’s Facebook page. The person who put it up is a very slight acquaintance who happened to be at the same birthday lunch as me and took some photos there and put them up on Facebook, without asking anyone’s permission.

I fear this would also happen on the sort of site you are suggesting.
