Malcolm ...............

I have no problem with people connected to my ancestors having photos that I might have

I do have a problem with the fact that ANYONE can take those photos and information from a public site because they THINK that "my" gt gt grandfather is "their" grandfather, when there is no other connection than a similar name ............ in fact where date and place of birth, date and place of death, children etc etc are all different.

I've told this story before .......

......... I had a very small tree on ancestry, just 2 names of my gt aunt and her husband, started because I wanted somewhere to keep that information until I could find out more about him. I forgot about it, and didn't make it private when I made my main tree unavailable to viewing.

Imagine my surprise when I found them acquired by a guy as his gt gt gt ancestors .......... the similarities between them were very simple.

The two couples had the same names ........... VERY common names in Lancashire

All had been born in Lancashire, and all had emigrated to New Jersey, USA

The only problem was that his couple emigrated before 1830, and had numerous children born between then and about 1840-45.

Mine married and emigrated in 1902, and both had been born in the early 1880s ..................

The "acquirer" had paid no attention to the dates.

I was lucky .............. I left a note on his tree, pointing out that these 2 could in no way be his ancestors, and he removed them within 3 days.

I have no photos of my gt aunt and husband, so could not have posted them, which might have helped ................ but then, how many of us have photos of ancestors even from the early 1900s let alone the 1800s?

I do have, as I am sure that many us do, copies of photographs in books, manuscripts etc of places where ancestors lived, worked, got married, preached etc .............. but that doesn't mean that the photograph of a church in Leeds where my gt gt gt aunt Jemima got married in 1820 really is the same one where your Jemima got married, even if the names are similar and both marriages occurred in October.

Sorry Mark, I’m with Sylvia on this. It might be OK if all the photos were of people known definitely to be deceased but I think it very likely that photos and information about living people will get on there too.

I have had a very recent experience of this. I have chosen not to join Facebook but I have been told that my photo is on someone’s Facebook page. The person who put it up is a very slight acquaintance who happened to be at the same birthday lunch as me and took some photos there and put them up on Facebook, without asking anyone’s permission.

I fear this would also happen on the sort of site you are suggesting.

On Ancestry I have found about 100 photo's of my ancestor's' some of the same person at a different age. I have seen other tree,s with my old photo's & old news papper's cutting taken from my tree of which I don,t mind. Anybody can find a name, but to put a photo to it makes a name into a person It you know what I mean

That's true! :-D

I found a photo of my dad's stepdad on Ancestry - but then, later on, I also found photo's of him in newspapers.

yep ............. but I am much more careful with many other photos that I have.

But I also have not put her name, and I am not on here under my name. I don't think I have ever identified any people in photos that I've posted on here other than by their relationship to me ("mother+, grandmother", OH's great grandmother" etc)

Presumably posting photos in a Gallery would mean identifying the people and places, with full names, dates, etc. Or they would be no good for helping anyone fill out their tree or gather photos of relations.

That's how photos appear on Ancestry, FB, and other sites.

Umm - but your avatar is you, and your grandmother.
I can copy that.

SylviaInCanada Report 25 Nov 2018 23:55

Not that happy to be honest .................

People post photos of relations, ancestors, places etc etc on their trees on Ancestry. Unless the tree is made totally private, anyone can take those photos and claim them as their own.

Same happens to photos posted on FB on genealogy sites, people's pages, or open postings ............... photos stolen by anyone.

I'm willing to share what photos I have with people who are truly connected but not with Uncle Tom Cobley and all.

I certainly wouldn't be posting anything on such a site.

FWIW ...................... I currently have a friend on another site who is having a major discussion with someone else who believes that the photo my friend posted of herself as a baby is that other person as a baby. The debate is going nowhere, as the other person does not believe it, and now wants photos of the parents of the baby :-( :-S

Very true Maggie, I have none from my Grandmother as a cousin took them all and just threw them away. If it can be done it would be a good idea Mark.

A good idea.
As family members die, 'stuff' tends to go to one side, so other members of the family end up with no photo's.
