*UPDATE*
This is a photograph of my Grandfather (the tall handsome one third from the left in the back row;-))
https://www.genesreunited.co.uk/keepsafe/asset/details/64817560

It was among my late Uncle's photos, and probably was my Gran's before that.

My Grandfather was a military man serving 22 years in the Army with secondment to the RAF.

Would any of you happen to know anything about this photo or recognise anyone in it?

Jem, it looks like a Shooting team.

Bisley was, and still is, home to the NRA (National Rifle Association), and many competitions were held there.

I have an acquaintance in the funny handshake mob who is an extremely keen shooter and has an extensive knowledge of the sport. I don't know precisely when I'll be seeing him again but it will be soon.

With your permission, I'll print or send him a copy of the photo and see if he is able to shed any light on it

That was interesting. Thanks Mr M :-)

I have found 6 names that I had written down from the back of the original (mine is a photo copy) some years ago and forgotten about :-0

Churcher? Gould, Crawley, Hubbard, Brockett and Rennie.

I think Brockett and Rennie are the ones in the front row.

Just found Jem. A bit off topic Lyne Soldiers mentioned....

That's a great website Mr M. :-)

Not my Lyne men sadly :-(
But I wouldn't be surprised if there is a connection to Lewis Lyne- the son of Charles Lyne (Newport, Monmouthshire)
That family keeps turning up where my Lynes were (Malta eg), but I've yet to make a connection :-D

I have since found another Lyne branch through marriage, so who knows :-D

Might be an idea to search FMP newspapers.

Thank You Barb <3

Thanks Mr M .... next time there's a £1 offer I certainly will! :-D

JemimaFawr Report 22 Jan 2018 21:20

There's a slight possibility that one of the two men to the left of my Grandfather could have been Charles Churcher- a British Sports Shooter who had competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics.

He died in Kent in 1951 according to Wikipedia. My Grandfather would have been based in Kent in 1927 when this photo was taken, so it is definitely a possibilty :-D

Allan Report 22 Jan 2018 21:26

Jem, further to my PM, I've searched the FMP newspaper records and whilst not seeing any mention of this particular team, it appears that a normal rifle team does consist of eight men

JemimaFawr

JemimaFawr Report 22 Jan 2018 21:46

Ah! So 7 in the photo, and the 8th taking it!

edited ... there are 8 in the photo
I had blown it up and in doing so lost the 8th man!:-D

Allan has pointed out that it looks like a "fun" photo taken by the group after the event.
There's a chamber pot and bottles of beer among the prizes :-D :-D :-D

and now I'm wondering if the names on the back were done in jest too!
So was it THE Churcher ... or not?! :-D

JemimaFawr

JemimaFawr Report 22 Jan 2018 21:51

....and was it BISLEY? ..... or where they just messing about? :-S

there are now more questions than answers lol :-D :-D :-D
