Evening all. No renovating tonight. Put it off until tomorrow evening. It has been persistently raining here all day. Very cold, wet, miserable with hail. I am going to have a lurk around the boards and then catch up on my sleep.

Good luck with the Agency interview. Take anything they say with a pinch of salt. They promise the moon, but often fail to deliver.

Exams now officially ended for the season. Hurray! Although it was only part time/casual and the money useful, it was also quite stressful, and I'm glad its over.

Hi everyone, it's 6.30pm here. I've been trying to thaw out for days, just had a bowl of soup, and some crusty bread.The dogs are laying under my desk, one is a shocking snorer.The heater is going flat out.
I've been trying to clean up. It's been a while since the bug has bitten so I better make the most of it.
It's been so cold here. I'm wearing trakkies,gloves and a hoodie, so I can get something done around the house. If I don't, I will put the heater on and there's another day gone.I'll sit at the computer all day playing Mahjongg, or some other mind numbing game. OH leaves the door open all the time.
"Were you born in a tent" is my latest comment.

I have officially retired mysef from climbing turret staircases in castles...until the next time. The tops of my legs are only just recovering lol.

Could Aunty or Hollzy explain something please? We know you have high summer temps where air cooling or conditioners are a boon, but as you also have cool/cold (in comparison) winters, why don't your dwellings also have a central heating system, be it warm air, pumped water, or even electric radiators?

I've always wondered that DET. I've got a couple of friends in OZ and I don't understand why they don't get heating in for the winter.

I am so tired we have had the Brownies clearing a very overgrown part of the churchyard ready for them to plant their centenary Oak Tree. Bless them they all worked so hard I should think they will sleep well tonight.

Hi all, spent the evening and some of the night working on the renovations.

Why do you think we do not have heating in our houses. Of course we do. Just not the same idea as your central heating. By central heating I understand you have a big boiler in your basement which pumps hot air around your house. We don't have basements. What we have is either reverse cycle airconditioning which gives us hot in winter and cold in summer. This can be ducted throughout the house. Or we can just have the ducted cooling or ducted heating separately. Or we have gas heating which can be ducted throughout the house or just heating to one or two rooms. Or we have stand alone heaters, oil filled column heaters, fan heaters or radiators.

Most part of Australia have a fairly mild winter which only lasts about two to three months. Even though it is cold in the mornings, most days it warms up a bit. We do not have many days with temperatures under 14 degrees all day. The snow only falls on the high bits, and there aren't too many of them. Anyone living north f the Tropic of Capricorn would laugh at the suggestion of central heating. They need central cooling with an extra jumper for when the temp falls to below 15 degrees.

In my house, which is below the Tropic of Capricorn but not quite in Antarctica, we have ducted cooling. This means we have a unit on our roof which pumps cold air throughout the house during the summer. In the lounge room we have a gas heater which is fed from the same natural gas as our cooking stove. The heater heats our lounge, dining room and kitchen. If we keep the doors shut. The bedrooms are not heated and I have a gas filled column heater in my computer room which I only use when my fingers are too cold to type.

So there you are a potted synopsis of the heating and cooling of Australia.

Lol - isn't it strange that the inhabitants of one country have different opinions of how the inhabitants of another live? The query arose as you have said in the past about having to bring the 'study' free standing heater in, and now Hollzy is bundled up to the nines even to the extent of wearing gloves indoors!

Most homes in the UK now have central heating of some description, the Central refering to one place for heating the air or water, which is then circulated/pumped through out the house. And no, the gas boiler, if that is the method used to heat the air (or water which circulates through the radiators) is not usually in a basement - only pre WW2 houses tend to have basements! The more modern boilers are wall mounted and about the size of a slim kitchen cupboard. Oil fired boilers may be larger. We've lived in a house which had a 'back boiler' on a solid fuel fire, in our case coal, which was located in the living room. The village didn't have mains gas. Some neighbours had a v large tank to store either oil or pressurised gas which was delivered by tanker, in their garden.

The main difference that I can see, is that the aim is to have heating available in every room, usually from a radiator which can individually be regulated. The theory is that if all rooms are heated, even at a low temp, it is more efficient than just heating the main living room. 'They' are very keen on insulation as well, although RMS would laugh at the thickness of loft and other insulations recommended. You try to keep heat out...we try to keep it in :)
