Reg, can I ask for your help one more time please. I am taking your advice and sending for certif. I thought I'd better start with my grandad but I can't find him. I know his name was Phillip Leslie John or Phillip John Leslie James. B , 28/11/1898 or 1899.I think he was born in wimbledon surrey which comes under kingston.His sisters were born in aberdare wales.I need to find the no so I can send off please.He was in Bagdad.

lesley have you got him on the 1901 census whould give you a bit more of certainty wher ehe was born

No,cant find him on there either.Parents Amelia Babb and John James.sisters Helena, Florence and Lilian.I found his marriage to Mary Inns 1921.There is some talk in the family that his sister Helena could actually be his mother but brought up by his gran.

Lesley are the sisters older than him? and do you know when and where his parents were married

Dawn, I think father John b 1852 Buckland devon.Mother b 1856 Landcross devon. marriage 1875 Merthyr Tidfil wales. But I need his certif to make sure Iv'e got the right people. Reg was guiding me this morning and said I need to get the certif to make sure I'm looking for the right people.see thread ' totally confused'. thats a big gap between the last two isnt it. Do you know what your grandads name is on your parents marriage cert or does his death cert give any clues. Will run off and see if I can find him anywhere dx

Dawn, I have his death as july qtr 1987 woking surrey.His is phillip James on there.

Lesley what age does it give on the death cert? Cant find any for that district in Nov quarter for both years, got one in jun quarter of 1899 in wales?

Dawn, havent got the certif yet but on ancestry it says b 1899 age at death 87.Woking north west surrey 17 p 694.

where do you get that he was born in Wimbledon from?

I can't remember. I must have seen it somewhere to make the change from wales to wimbledon.If I hadn't seen it I would have taken it as wales the same as his sisters.But I have looked everywhere and I cant re-find the information I must have seen before.

do we know when Amelia died and was she definitely around when Phillip was young?

I have been looking through some letters from his daughters for clues.All I have found out is that he altered his age by 2 years to get into the army.service no 201254 private 1/5 th east surrey reg.medals british war medal and victory medal. discharged 21st oct 1919.rifleman 28/7/1915 stokes gunner april 1918 .I dont know if that helps or even makes any sense to you . Amelia died august 1944 age 89 at pelham rd wimbledon according to my aunt.but Iv'e never found record of it on ancestry.

If family talk is right and he was actually Helenas then it may be possile she went away to have him so we could eb looking for another registration district

Well,thats it I give up. I'm completely stumped.Iv'e looked at military records.Births for devon and wales and I can't see him anywhere. I will have to miss him out and go for the certif of his father and hope it's the right one.Thanks to all of you for your help.
