Is there a site I can look at to see which registration district covers which areas

Lesley

Lesley Report 27 Aug 2007 15:36

Thanks Karen. At least I know that it probably wasn't legal and just "in the family".

David Report 27 Aug 2007 15:10

Hello again Lesley,
According to a book I'm reading called Love Child by Sue Elliott, adoption didn't become legal in England and Wales until 1926.
Before that children were 'fostered' either within the family, or whoever would take them in, but because there were no laws for adoption, the childs parents could claim them back, which some did when the child became of an age to be able to work and earn a living.
I'm sorry, but your puzzle pieces just aren't coming together for you today are they, but I hope I've been able to answer your question.
Best regards,
Karen.

Andy, That does sound like it could be her.I Thought I'd found her birth as 1876 in Merthyr, but I could be wrong I'll have another look.If she was living in FulhamThat would explain Phillip's birth in Fulham. This marriage happened 2 years after his birth of 1898 or 1899.By this time he must have been adopted by his gran Amelia.Helena has 2 sisters,Florence and Lilian. Helena and Florence were born in Aberdare and Lilian was born in Wimbledon. They are all together on the 1891 census. I cant find any of them on the 1901 census. How can I find out if the adoption was legal or just within the family.

Lesley Report 27 Aug 2007 14:23

Thankyou Petrina,Margaret and David.
Petrina, sorry none of those are mine.Mine was born in Aberdare Wales.Thankyou for looking anyway.
Margaret, I will contact June and see if it's my one.
David,Yes the 2 are close together. Those born or married in Aberdare are registered in Merthyr.I just don't think that the Phillip born at Gower is mine as it's too far from Aberdare where we seem to have reletives.Thankyou all.

Hello Leslie,
I'm just passing some time this morning, and looking through the interesting problems that people encounter with their families, and having read yours, can I say don't dismiss the Merthyr Tydfil and Aberdare link, for the simple reason, both areas are very close to each other, but Merthyr Tydfil was the registration distrist for a huge area. Over the years there have been many council boundary changes, so it might be worth trying those.
A friend of mine who also is having problems tracing her family, encloses a letter when buying certs, to the effect 'only supply if the father is etc etc'. This way saves her the expense of unnessary and unwanted certs.
Hope I haven't confused you even more in your quest.
Best regards,
Karen (partner of Dave Hicks)

Hallo nice people.I just thought that after all your hard work helping me that you deserved to be kept up with developments. My mum has spoken to my aunt and it seems that when the lady I thought was my g-mother,Amelia, died she left Phillip a house and in her will she says "to my addopted son Phillip " this seems to point to the fact that Helena known as Nellie is indeed his mum.She married a man called spanton. They had 2 daughters.Eileen and Muriel.I think Iv'e found Muriel's birth in 1902 but I'm not sure it's the right one.Anyway, she went to live in Canada and got into financial dificulty and Amelia then age about 70 went to Canada to sort her problems out for her.In the end they moved to California to better weather as she had health problems. Now seeing that this lady is my real g-mother I would like to find out more.Where do you suggest I start.Oh, by the way,my g-father was born in Fulham she said but I still can't find his birth.Iv'e looked at US fed cencus on ancestry but I can only see one Helen Spanton , New York and it wont let me look as I havent got world membership.
