Hi all Can anyone who is good with the old writing identify the place of birth of this lady on the 1891? I can't read the writing and have no knowledge of Bedfordshire so can't really hazard a guess. Her name is Mary Ann Stratton, age 36. She is in the St Lukes area of Canning Town, West Ham at 83 Adamson (?) Road. Thanks for any help anyone can give. Lynne

Lynne, Have you tried other censuses? 1881 says she's French. Crista

Definitely looks like Adamson to me, when you use the magnifier. Check out his other s and n on the page.

Hi Heather and Crista The Mary J Stratton on the 1881 is a different lady. James re-married in 1890 to Mary Ann so it isn't her unfortunately. Thanks for looking. Thanks for confirming the Adamson for me Heather, I wasn't 100% sure on that either but its really the place of birth I am stuck on. Thanks again Lynne

Lynne Report 18 Nov 2004 12:24

Hi Crista Could well be Luton. I thought that the first letter was an H but looking at the way he does his Ls you could very well be right. Thanks Lynne

Heather Report 18 Nov 2004 12:28

Sorry, was being thick, shows you what 6 solid hours on here followed by 4 hours sleep and then back on it can do!! (MUST do my work soon). I can see what you mean about Luton, but the first letter doesnt look like the L he used at the beginning of Labourer further down, does it. I reckon he must have been doing that page at 5 p.m. on a Friday!

OK, I stand corrected! There's only 2 Mary Ann Farr's born Bedfordshire on the 1881 census index - the one above & one in Biggleswade (also married).

do we know what Mary Anns maiden name actually was? We could try and find her on th e1871 Zoe

Lynne

Lynne Report 18 Nov 2004 14:10

Hi guys Just back from my lunch break. Just to confirm - Mary Ann's maiden name is Farr. She married James Stratton in West Ham. Their marriage is in June qtr 1890 as Richard said. I can't find her or her brothers and sisters on the 1881. She also disappears again on the 1901. On the 1901 her son Frederick is staying with his Aunt and Uncle, Annie (nee Farr) and William Bays. If anyone has any ideas on how I can find them I would greatly appreciate it! Lynne

Lynne Do you have the marriage cert, confirming that Farr was her maiden name? She could have been married previously like James. (35 was a bit older than the average age for a first marriage in them days) Richard

Lynne

Lynne Report 18 Nov 2004 14:31

Hi Richard Her maiden name was definitely Farr. I am waiting for the Certificate from GRO to confirm that she wasn't married before James Stratton. I can't find her as a sixteen year old on the 1871 either though and I know she had two sisters and two younger brothers at that time all with the surname Farr. Thanks for your help Lynne

Lynne Report 18 Nov 2004 16:19

Hi Zoe I have Thomas born approx 1863, Annie Victoria born approx 1858, John born approx 1860 and Susan born approx 1862. None of the dates are confirmed I'm afraid and I know that all but Annie and Mary Ann left England by 1881. If you can help in any way I would be really grateful. Thanks Lynne
