Would anyone be able to tell me how I can find out whether an address that I have on the 1871 Census 8 CHATHAM HILL, KENT, was a PUB. As my gt grandad lived there with his family and whilst I was in Kent at the weekend I went to have a look and found that It is a pub now but not sure about it back then!! Can you remember the name of the pub? There are alot of sites on the web giving you history of public houses etc. If you know the name try googling for it. Julie

Maybe a phone call to the Landlord . He/she might know. Julie

Thanks for that bit of advice Julie just rang them and its been a pub for around 230years, so just need to find out whether he was a landlord or just lived there! Thanks again Jennie

Hi, I think if he was the landlord on the 1871 census it would say ( landlord ) in the ( occupation ) column ? Roy

I live right near chatham Hill 3 minute walk can't remember seeing that pub part of Chatham Hill is Rainham Road but I did a search and this came up www(.)locallife(.)co(.)uk/medway/pubs3(.)asp dont know how old the site is can't see it in yellow pages Jeanette (walks around with eyes closed)em LOL

Roy it has him down as a Day Labourer.....would they put both down if he was a landlord as well? Any ideas Jennie

yes found it Now I know why I get a bus up the hill. I have just thought my G grandad could have been a customer he lived near there. Jeanette

If he was down as a day labourer, was he down as head of household, and if not, who was head ? their occupation should be landlord. Roy

He was down as head of household, just wondered if he might have held two jobs....there is no occupation for his wife...unless they just lived above the pub they had 7 children living there!! Jennie

Do you have the family on any other census, on the 1881 census there are several family's living at that address and none of them are the landlord either. Roy

Only 1861 cannot seem to find them anywhere else....I know they ended up in Kensington London around the 1900's Jennie

If you post some details i am sure that someone on here may be able to help, only it is very hard when we don't no who we are looking for. Roy

As a Man of Kent who spent 5 years travelling past this point to and from school I have to question whether there is any evidence that the property currently known as 8 Chatham Hill, the pub Old Lord Raglan has always been known by that address. I do not know the answer but I do know that in the 1891 Kelly's Directory there is a public house listed by the name 'Old Lord Raglan' and the address of this pub is 260 New Road Chatham. The landlord is Edward Maynard. The 1891 census records Edward Maynard as a publican and the image clearly shows the address as 260 New Road, without naming the pub. Those with local kowledge will remind me but isn't New Road the one that starts (ends) on the left railway arch as you come down Chatham Hill to Luton Arches. It's been 30 years so I could be confused!! Pete

Just found another Trade Directory entry for the Old Lord Raglan. This is the 1873 Kelly's. Old Lord Raglan. Hy. Jas. Rawlinson. New Road Chatham. Couldn't find him there in the 1871 census but he's there in the 1881. His address shows as 260 New Road and the property is recorded as a public house. His occupation is 'Licensed Victualler'. So I would guess that the property currently known as 8 Chatham Hill, a pub known as the Old Lord Raglan, has some 130 years back been known as 260 New Road. Which suggests that the cottage/house which was listed as 8 Chatham Hill in the 1871 census could be almost any of the homes 20 up from Luton Arches, or if they numbered from the top of the hill....
