I'am looking for a marriage to Robert Carruthers married to an Elizabeth. I have found a marriage that I think might be the one but would like to cross reference it first before I buy the cert. The marriage took place in Manchester 1855 Jul-Sept vol 8d page 353. My problem is how do I do it? Cheryl

are you lookin at this on Ancestry - if so click on 'click to see others on page' and you will come up with a list of names - Robert Carruthers 1855 Jul-Aug-Sep Manchester (1837-1924) Lancashire Bridget Dobbin 1855 Jul-Aug-Sep Manchester (1837-1924) Lancashire Patrick Dobbins 1855 Jul-Aug-Sep Manchester (1837-1924) Lancashire Anthony Hennessy 1855 Jul-Aug-Sep Manchester (1837-1924) Lancashire Catherine Leonard 1855 Jul-Aug-Sep Manchester (1837-1924) Lancashire which means Robert could have married Catherine or Bridget. No Elizabeth mentioned so presumably not the marriage you are looking for.

Look for a marriage for Robert on freebmd and if it's there click on page number which will give you names of people on that page and hope there's only one Elizabeth. Heather

Have you found them together on the 1861 census - if so give us some details and we will see if we can find the marriage for you.

Cheryl Lancashire bmd doesn't list a Robert Carruthers marrying any Elizabeth in 1855. It does however list a Robert C Carruthers marrying an Elizabeth Pullin in 1854 at St James in Gorton, Manchester. There is this marriage on Lancashire BMD for 1854, though: Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1854 Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference CARRUTHERS * Robert C PULLIN Elizabeth Manchester, Gorton, St. James Manchester 56/1/41 Could that be them? The asterisk means there are alternative names, and when you click you get this alternative: JOHNSON Robert C PULLIN Elizabeth Manchester, Gorton, St. James Manchester 56/1/41 (So it looks as though this Robert had two different surnames, Carruthers and Johnson.) Kate.

Hi Jim, All the names/dates/places fit but why would they change there name to Johnson? No wonder I was having problems finding them, this is somthing Iwill have to study. I have been trying to work out why Robert had 2 surnames but it did not cross my mind to look for Johnson in the census, this is somthing i will have to study. I am very grateful for your help. Well done Jim, That ties in the two names on the marriage register nicely. Now, as Cheryl says, why? Snowdrops

I think the clincher is they all have C after their first name (Carruthers)? But there is a son missing!!!

Last night I found my Robert Carruthers on the 1841 along with his mother Fanny Carruthers and his sister Mary Ann Carruthers. I didn't really take much notice of the other names on the form, I was more into wanting to be able to read the name of the address. Looking at it again I find the names Ester Johnson and Martha Johnson. Surley they must be connected. What makes it more frustrating is the fact there is no head of the house. What a complicated family! Thanks for all your help, Cheryl

did Robert and Elizabeth have children? if so send off for a birth cert and you will get Elizabeths maiden name, makes searching for marriage so much easier xx

The only census I have Reg are 1871/81 and I have tied in 1841 although not 100% HO 107/132/5 The 1861 census Jim came up with is right as Robert was a fancy goods dealer and I have now looked up births and found most under the name carruthers Johnson Cheryl
