Sometimes marriage certs. state the father is dead and sometimes they don't.

Ozi,

Thank you for that. Wouldn't Willaims MC state Father deceased if he were dead? As his MC doesn't say that his Dad is dead.......but where was he on the 1911 census? Someone had suggested debtors prison as a possibility....but when I've looked at 1911 census I haven't been able to find conclusive evidence of his whereabouts!

Rose,

Very true, mistakes easily happen, and poor handwriting wouldn't help either. Strike yajy last bit, I just guessed she died in the census year, as I don't have any freebmd ref in her notes. Unless I forgot to write it down.

Rose,

My great grandad is down as head of the household, and all his brothers were listed as his sons! one being older than himself! Lol!

So I don't know where his Dad was, as when my Great Grandad William married in 1913 his Dads name appears on the MC.

There is so much room for error on the census. The census schedule was either filled in by the household or the enumerator and then copied into the books we can view. You can see how mistakes could creep in.

How many children does it say they had in 1911 and who long have they been married?

Rose

Caroline

Caroline Report 7 Apr 2010 00:02

Again, that would make sense, but that is one hell of a mistake on the census, whether the family error or the enumerator? As I couldn't find him in 1901 but can in 1911. I thought Emmie may have been a pet version of Emma. So there you are, I've learnt something else! As my great grandad wrote on the 1911 census that there were nine children born to his parents. But neither of them appear on that census. I think I have a death for Sarah but not Henry snr.

Hi Rose,

That makes perfect sense! I couldn't find Henry, William, Ann or Richard as Chandlers. But now the connection has been made it appears to be slotting into place nicely!
Thanks again to your persistance.

Emmie in 1901 must be James.

Ozi,

The names on the certs that I have the fathers were Samuel on one, John on another, no name on two! Cant recall the other one at mo. But the mothers were Marys or Janes etc.

Hello Rose,

Is that on the 1881 census? I dont think I've had that much luck finding Henry either....!

Does that mean the BC you have for William born Bethnal Green does not have Henry and Sarah as parents?

Caroline Report 6 Apr 2010 23:38

Ozi,

Indeed they were hard times for many families. I believe that in 1901 they were one step away from the workhouse. Or so it was put to me when I happened to mention it to someone at work.

Can't seem to see Henry or Sarah in 1881.

It could be that one or both were married before and York might not be Sarah's maiden name.

Hi Ozi,

Thank you for looking that up for me, I have managed to track him down through all the census years from 1891 - 1911, that is how I found out all his siblings names. Which came as quite a shock I can tell you! As I said previously, my Dad thought he only had one uncle!

Best wishes Caroline.

Hi Ozi,

Thank you for replying. I'm pretty sure that I have that BC in my folder (I have at least 5 that weren't him!), and it's one I discounted. As none of it matched to what I already had.

Best wishes Caroline.
