I've got it. Click on Family Tree in the dark green bar above this page. It gives you two options. One of which is GEDCOMS. Click on that. You then get two choices, to Import a Gedcom or to Export a Gedcom. You want Export.

Follow the instructions. I haven't done it, but I guess you will be given the option to download it onto your hard-drive, so do that in a place that you will remember. I actually have a folder on my hard-drive entitled GEDCOMS cos I have other people's family trees on there too. So download it. And then go to PAF and upload that GEDCOM file to PAF.

Open PAF and go to File, Import, and click on the GEDCOM file you have just saved on your hard-drive. And Bingo, it should work.

I did ask my friend who uses Legacy, but he only has a trial version and it doesn't sound very good.

If you need a free version PAF seems okay for starters.

Best of luck

Thank you Margaret, I'm going to give it a go at the weekend. Someone else has sent a message saying to try tribal pages too. I'm spoilt for choice now.
I'll try to remember to let you know how I get on.
Many thanks, Donna

Hi Margaret, I've just had a quick look and I'm worried as it says that if you use Gedcom That you you loose all the photos, all relations you have plotted and mapped and any hot matches. I have 1397 realtions on my tree and would be gutted if I lost it all.Are you sure its safe?
Regards Donna.

Hi All

Thank you for your email. I am afraid that at the moment it is not possible to view the print preview if your tree has more than about 800 names in it. This is because it would take too long to display.

I will mention this to the development team though in case they decide to make any changes in the future.

I am sorry for the inconvenience.

You pays your money and takes your choice, as my old boss used to say.

Get a decent commercial program - FTM, 2010 for example at around £20 for the software alone - and it will do just what you want.

Elizabeth2469049 Report 24 Jun 2010 19:08

I knew that if you imported a gedcom to a GR tree it completely overrode the earlier tree - and I knew it didn't export photographs - I didn't have any photographs or map references to export so I wouldn't have noticed - and I don't think it wiped out any hot matches. Is it really saying that to export a gedcom from GR wipes out all these references on the GR records? I can see why Donna is concerned - my GR tree seems intact but have I missed something?

Elizabeth2469049 Report 25 Jun 2010 11:28

I have been thinking hard about this - I don't (unusually) get InspectorGreenPen's point. Surely what you do with the gedcom when it reaches you is irrelevant - GR doesn't know what you are going to do with it, whether you put it on a freebie or a more elaborate programme. Surely everyone who has gedcomed a tree out of GR to load elsewhere hasn't been left with such a depleted tree on GR? Please can anyone give me a definitive answer on this? I wasn't originally that worried about my tree, but such information might well put off Donna - and others! - from gedcoming out of GR at all.

Persephone Report 25 Jun 2010 12:35

Never made any difference to my GR tree Elizabeth - I now have a larger tree elsewhere that started from me exporting from GR. Maybe one day I will gedcom it back and then it will show the relationships better.
Yes the photos don't transfer but the rest looks perfectly okay.

My grandparents were first cousins and it makes for messy reading on GR with some people having to be entered twice. In fact I have a lot of rellies marrying other rellies and the only way to have it shown correctly on GR is to import it from another site. My tree on here looks like I have more people than I really do have with all the double entries.

Cheers

I wouldn't worry about hot matches, they will come back, though you might find a lot of people you have already contacted.

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 26 Jun 2010 06:17

When you export a gedcom copy of your tree from GR, or indeed any site for that matter, the original version on that site remains exactly as it was, photos and any other attachments etc (although these won't be included on the gedcom)

However, when you import a gedcom back to GR from your PC, then your original GR tree will be overwritten completely and you will loose any photos, attachments, HotMatches etc, but not your contacts with other members.

Blimey what a debate I've caused, sorry all.
So just to clarify if I GEDCOM my tree from GR the tree remains the same on the site still as I don't want to come off here at all and I can have another copy on my computer that I can print from, is that correct?
Thank you all for your help and advise and I'll look in to the £20 package.

No apology needed Donna - there will have been loads of other people reading your thread and going "Oh, THAT'S how you do it, thank goodness somebody asked". Everything's easy when you know how to do it.

Keep asking!

Donna Report 2 Jan 2011 17:28

I have finally had chance to try to GEDCOM my tree to PAF and the genes site has let me done load to a GEDCOM file but annoyingly even with the help of my Daughter and Uncle who are both VERY good with computers we seem unable to set the details up on the PAF site. We have set up a file by copy and pasting the file to documents but even though its saying its there the PAF site says there is nothing there to download.
Can any body please help as I really wanted to be able to get this sorted for my father in laws 70th birthday Today buts its looking unlikly I will ever be able to print off my tree.
I don't suppose Genes has now found a way to print off larger trees yet has it? I know earlier in the year they hadn't.
I would really apreaciate any help PLEASE...Donna

Elizabeth2469049 Report 2 Jan 2011 23:39

Hoped someone else would answer this! but I'll try again. I think you had better start again from the beginning. I take you have got PAF loaded now as a program? You shouldn't have to copy and paste anything.

Start again and gedcom your GR tree which will reach you as an e-mail attachment. Click on the attachment and it will tell you that you have to create a new file. So click on the form to create a new file, giving it a suitable name, and click on Save and you will have the tree as a file. (Mine appears in my program list under Family Search and I have it on my desktop called PAF5)

I hope someone else will see this anld correct anything I've got wrong!

Good luck - I do sympathise - I made a hash of putting in an FTM tree, bought a newer one which has been sitting in my pending tray for months waiting for me to pluck up courage!

Persephone

Persephone Report 3 Jan 2011 00:22

I think that should do it Elizabeth.
You have to download the PAF first and then go to browse and the browser will search for your gedcom file.

Same works for Legacy or Tribal Pages - free editions as well.
You have to have a fair amount of space to download Legacy but Tribal is similar to GR in that it is not on your laptop it is on the net and with Tribal it has a match system - sometimes you can see others trees without asking - all depends on the way they have set up their security.

I don't know whats wrong with my PAF? Think maybe I should try to re install that as I have tried again twice to GEDCOM from Genes site as PAF says incomplete file? Somethings going wrong somewhere As I have followed your instructions to the letter.
Its sooooo frustrating.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
