By all means do scan them through to me.

I don't know if I can come up with anything but I am certainly willing to try.

Best Regards,

Hi Dea,

You've caught me coming off a night shift but i'll give you what info i have before i go to bed for a couple of hours.

The daughter Charlotte Finlay Sloan was my Grandmother, b.1886, d. 1932. parents; Andrew Sloan, d.1887. Catherine, d.1927 ms Burns. On Charlottes death cert her mother is down as Catherine Sloan subsquently Paterson ms Burns.

The marriage cert of Andrew & Catherine in 1868 gives her surname as Burns-Briggs, her parents on this were down as John Briggs dec, Mary Briggs ms Burns.
I have an 1871 census with her and hubby living with his father Joseph, his mother Agnes was already dec on their marriage.
Andrew Sloan died 1887 the cert says he was married to catherine Burns and she 'marked' it Catherine Sloan.

Catherines marriage to R Paterson you have a copy of.
I have that 1891 census too, i have a birth cert for Agnes Frazer Sloan, 1875. Have found nothing for Isabella yet.

I have a 1901 census showing Robert, Catherine and Charlotte, now 15.

Catherines death cert 1927, she is down as Catherine Burns Paterson, married 1st to Andrew Sloan, 2nd Robert Oliphant paterson. Parents are listed as John & Mary Briggs ms Burns. death registered by Charlotte.

Phew!!

Its only on the 2nd marriage cert that the parents names dont match!

Now you can be confused as i am.

If you have the time and patience i'll scan in all i have and send you them later, i wont be offended if youd rather not just let me know.

Thanks for your help anyway

Dea

Hi again,

This really does not add up !!

I have looked at the cert and it has your Robert Oliphant Paterson - bachelor - parents Thomas (Tailor journeyman) + Mary mmn 'Youngers'

Then we have Catherine who was a Power Loom Weaver's Widow

Her name certainly looks like BURNS (possibly Barns?), so this I presume is her married name.

Parents are shown as William Sloan (or Sloane) - a weaver, + Catherine (mmn Henderson).

All parents are deceased.

It therefore looks as if she was born a 'Sloan' ???

I am somewhat confused - Sorry !

I had a quick look for them on census - I have them on 1891 - Robert + Catherine with children Isabella (17), Agnes (15) and Charlotte (5).

Do I take it these are all children of her previous marriage, now renamed Paterson?

Do you have any of them on any other census that I could look at?

Dont worry Jill, there was a lot of people movement in Scotland in the 1800s and a lot of boundary changes, it's interest but confusing!

Janet, have been checking parish records, it's taking me a little time to get used to the different paperwork, and the handwriting is getting worse!

I'll keep plodding on tho,

Thanks to you all for your comments and suggestions and offers of help.

Oh - sorry Carol - I feel like I've jinxed it for you! Didn't mean to. Have no idea how the Scottish system works.

Scottish birth certificates didn't start till 1855. You will need to look for the Online parish records at Scotlandspeople website.

I've tried Burns, Briggs, Burns-Briggs, Briggs-Burns! and nothing on any of them which is why i think there maybe another surname lurking somewhere.

I think it's going to keep me busy for a few years!

Have you looked for her birth under her mother's name? I'm sure you have but just in case ...

Thanks, Reg, that would have been nice to know at the beginning!

Matter of fact, I can't find the first marriage on Free BMD, either.

ErikaH Report 18 Mar 2008 15:49

Margaret.....I think you'll find it was in Scotland!

Mother's info is not on English/Welsh certs

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 18 Mar 2008 15:45

That 1890 marriage isn't on Free BMD no matter what name I use for her.

Carol Report 18 Mar 2008 15:28

I did wonder that Reggie, but at the top of the cert it gives the surname as Catherine Sloan, ( which is what i entered) although she signed it Burns (Her mothers ms) which she used quite a lot, just to confuse me!
Her death cert gives the names of both husbands and was registered by her daughter (my grandmother)

It's getting a little confusing not knowing which surname to use!

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 18 Mar 2008 15:15

Are you 100% certain that both marriage certs refer to the same woman?
