Hi,
I'm needing help to read a surname on my G Grandmas 2nd marriage cert.

Catherine Burns-Briggs born 1846c
1st marriage to Andrew Sloan 31/12/1867
Parents on this showing as John&Mary Briggs, ms Burns

2nd marriage to Robert Oliphant Paterson, 31/101890
Parents on this ...William&Catherine??, ms Henderson (I think)

Her death cert has Briggs as the parents again.

I've been unable to find a birth cert for her and i'm wondering if its because she had another surname.

I have a copy of the 2nd marriage cert on my pc, is there anyway of attaching it or showing it!?

If not, any websites that might help me read it would be great...any help would be great!

Thanks

Carol

Are you 100% certain that both marriage certs refer to the same woman?

Carol

Carol Report 18 Mar 2008 15:28

I did wonder that Reggie, but at the top of the cert it gives the surname as Catherine Sloan, ( which is what i entered) although she signed it Burns (Her mothers ms) which she used quite a lot, just to confuse me!
Her death cert gives the names of both husbands and was registered by her daughter (my grandmother)

It's getting a little confusing not knowing which surname to use!

That 1890 marriage isn't on Free BMD no matter what name I use for her.

Margaret.....I think you'll find it was in Scotland!

Mother's info is not on English/Welsh certs

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 18 Mar 2008 15:50

Matter of fact, I can't find the first marriage on Free BMD, either.

Have you looked for her birth under her mother's name? I'm sure you have but just in case ...

I've tried Burns, Briggs, Burns-Briggs, Briggs-Burns! and nothing on any of them which is why i think there maybe another surname lurking somewhere.

I think it's going to keep me busy for a few years!

Any chance of someone looking up parish records for you?

Scottish birth certificates didn't start till 1855. You will need to look for the Online parish records at Scotlandspeople website.

Oh - sorry Carol - I feel like I've jinxed it for you! Didn't mean to. Have no idea how the Scottish system works.

Carol

Carol Report 19 Mar 2008 09:34

Dont worry Jill, there was a lot of people movement in Scotland in the 1800s and a lot of boundary changes, it's interest but confusing!

Janet, have been checking parish records, it's taking me a little time to get used to the different paperwork, and the handwriting is getting worse!

I'll keep plodding on tho,

Thanks to you all for your comments and suggestions and offers of help.

Hi again,

This really does not add up !!

I have looked at the cert and it has your Robert Oliphant Paterson - bachelor - parents Thomas (Tailor journeyman) + Mary mmn 'Youngers'

Then we have Catherine who was a Power Loom Weaver's Widow

Her name certainly looks like BURNS (possibly Barns?), so this I presume is her married name.

Parents are shown as William Sloan (or Sloane) - a weaver, + Catherine (mmn Henderson).

All parents are deceased.

It therefore looks as if she was born a 'Sloan' ???

I am somewhat confused - Sorry !

I had a quick look for them on census - I have them on 1891 - Robert + Catherine with children Isabella (17), Agnes (15) and Charlotte (5).

Do I take it these are all children of her previous marriage, now renamed Paterson?

Do you have any of them on any other census that I could look at?
