Hi Janet,
The info you found is wrong somwhere as Maria was only 39 yrs old and Susannah was 51 ??? , I have about 5 informations on them all except James's death
James was the 1st child and then there was Joseph , Harry and Sarah, , Harry & Sarah were born on the I of M , Henry left them all for another female , I cannot find him on any other trees as if he did marry again or not.
I was only told what my gran wanted me to know when i asked, there are alot of skeletons in the closet by her & my mother , the only way I have to find out is to look up on the ancestors trees.

Just to clarify the position re "Unknown Soldier". His body may never have been recovered due to the horrific conditions at the front. Or perhaps his body was recovered but not identified and so buried in a CWGC grave marked "Unknown Soldier" etc. However, the CWGC is required to commemorate all the dead by name and so if he was never identified then his name will appear on one of the memorials to the missing in France or Belgium and also be listed on the CWGC website.

If you e-mail the Commonwealth War Graves Commission there's a possibility they may be able to help. I couldn't find my great uncle but I think they managed to find where he's commemorated through a publication called 'Soldiers Died in the Great War'. It's worth a try.
The address is [email protected].

I think the info from the enumerator was suspect to say the least. Looking at other entries on the page he has got all sorts of things wrong (on the image for once not an ancestry error!)

There are two James Ramsbottoms listed on

www.findmypast.com

'Solders who died in the Great War 1914 - 1918.'

One from West Hartlepool the other from St.Lukes, Blackburn.

Pam :
My Grt Uncle was born in Blackburn but not too sure about the parish area .
I'm not a member of "findmypast" only ancestors till June 2008.
Joan :
I looked up on CWGC and he's not there , maybe I'll try the REDCROSS , they don't have a website in UK .
Thanks so much for your help on the research .
Regards June

Find My Past is a pay to view site.

Ceefer Report 11 Mar 2008 16:29

Is it any good worth paying for ?

Have you tried the" find a grave" web site ? Worth a go ...also try Ancestry millitary and CWG by surname only , means an awful lot of trawling but a lot of soldiers went by their second name or even a given name ,some on CWG by an alias ... which may be shown ..Good luck ..

Ceefer Report 11 Mar 2008 17:29

Hi Kim,
I looked at CWG last night and have just spent over an hr looking at "Find a Grave " .
There's nothing, I think he must have been a missing person in action , WELL!! that will be something I'll never know.
Thanks Kim .

June , he may be one of the unknowns on CWWG...there are an awful lot .. have you searched for Josephs war records on Ancestry ? Post 1901 records are the hardest to search for and for me personally the most interesting , until I solve as many of these as I can I don,t think I want to delve into my familys history ,although I do have the basics back to 1700,s , these give me an insight to the people of the late 1800.s and early1900,s.Think what I,m saying is I want their stories , I want to make them real again .... not just birth , marriage an death ...

Kim,
James, Joseph and Harry were my gran's brothers.
James was the only one who went to war , I did look up every trees and war indexes of all kind .
I want to know how they lived ..were they happy etc ? I would have loved to have met the men., Joe & Harry have got families that are still alive but I don't know who they are or where they live .
I have only managed to get to 1808 on my family tree.
My education is very poor ; sorry .:-(

Sorry to repeat this but the point seems to have been missed. If he was missing in action and his body not found then his name will have been recorded by the CWGC on their website and on one of the memorials in France or Belgium. It is true that the very occasional name was not passed to the CWGC for commemoration and there are the occasional transcription errors but the numbers are very small. In my experience the main reason why names cannot be found is because the searcher has incorrect, incomplete or misleading information.

Denis Report 13 Mar 2008 12:29

Not wanting to confuse matters further but I note that on FreeBMD someone has attached a note to James' birth entry regarding the surname FICK. I also see that Henry Ramsbottom was born on IoM 28/12/1892 to Henry Ramsbottom and Maria Leek while Sarah was born on IoM 14/08/1895 to Henry Ramsbottom and Maria Fick. As regards the Findmypast website you can just buy some credits for about £6 or £7. Ther's no need to pay more.

Ceefer Report 13 Mar 2008 13:16

Hi Denis.
There has been some errors with the death and names ,
I did put Fick on freeBMD , in fact it is Leek !
I think so far is was Harry who was killed in action in Loos...1915 , I need to find out more by going to The Scottish Borderers in Berwick upon tweed which it is only an hr drive from my home.
I already have a sub' with Genes website till June 2008 , they keep asking for credit !! I paid just under £40.00 ...daylight robbery ....LOL
Would you say ," findmypast" good ?
