Has anyone taken my advice about Spybot and Ad-aware?

Ivy Report 31 Jan 2008 06:02

Hi Keith,

Yes, in that I showed your advice to OH (in the kind of way you do when you've discovered a scratch on the car paintwork... stupidly, I think I answered "no" to whether I would like to download software rather than killing the page at the top right hand corner) - he said we do have both - he ran checks yesterday which gave us the all-clear on the home computer. (Seems likely that work is OK since Norton intercepted it). Many thanks for the help.

By the way, if these problems are intermittent, then since the adverts are changed frequently, is it just one of the adverts that has the problem attached? (Question asked in complete ignorance, I have no computer skills at all).

[Ed - Sorry Michael, just re-read - that is what you suggest - and yes, I do have pop-ups blocked at work]

I thought I would let you know how I went on with my scan. Ad-Aware detected 181 problems which I have cleaned AVG SCAN was clear. I hope everybody else was able to sort out their pc.

I'm so pleased to see that I wasn't the only one that this happened to last night. I was just reading posts on a General thread when Malware popped up. At the same time my anti virus (Panda) also warned me that an unauthorised programme was trying to access my computer. Usually Panda restrains the programme and ask what I want to do but this time Malware was in and scanning and I had to click the little x to get rid of it.

Don't care what GR say, it almost certainly is something to do with them or their adverts.

It is still happening, I didn't have any problems last night but about 15 mins ago when I came on and and changed to the tips board it wanted to take me to another site.

We have Mcafee site advisor installed and that will not let you go to sites they rate as red which is what this one was.

I had already run my spyware scan and it found nothing, so it must be something going on on here.

I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser and there is a free add on called AdBlock plus. Since I have downloaded this, I haven't seen one single advert on this site. It stops all the flashing banners across the top and all the adverts which would normally be down the side. The page is beautifully uncluttered.

It only works with Firefox, just google for it. It is very easy to download, well I did it!

You must run spyware programmes to clean up your computer regularly, such as AVG spyware, Spybot or Ad-Aware (all free) because every single site you visit will leave a marker on your computer, most are reasonably harmless, but some trojans are dangerous, especially the key loggers which are looking for sequences of numbers such as bank details or card numbers.

I am just on work computer, on entering the site, McAfee has just blocked access by the performace optimizer programme, and deleted it, but still tried to take me to the page.

Keith, it was McAfee that stopped me being taken to the site also.

Don't download it, never download anything that just pops up.

Performance Optimizer is particularly nasty and gives false error reports - DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT
I have a thread on the General board and have sent a message to GR

This happened to me last night when I was on GR.

I did not click on the link and have run my antivirus and antispyware programs. Nothing was found.

However, my internet connection has become very erratic and keep playing up.

Is the GR site infected with something nasty?

Genes are currently denying that their is a problem, in their response to my message they told me that it was probably something to do with cookies and other sites as theirs was incapable of spreading viruses. Can we say 'delusional'?

Libby, try Tools - Adblock - Overlay flash, then block it in the usual way.
