Middlesex Maid Report 6 Nov 2005 12:11

I would apprecaiate any help/advice/inspiration in my quest! I cannot find birth details for my elusive gt grandfather who seemed to change his name at will! Here's what I have: On his marriage certificate in Chiswick in Oct 1904 he is named as Tracey Guy BAREHAM aged 22, son of Herbert William Bareham (deceased). On his first child's birth certificate in 1906 he calls himself George Bareham. On his second child's birth certificate in 1908 he calls himself George Tracey Guy Bareham. On his death certficate in Sep 1949 he was back to Tracy Guy Bareham aged 65 years. I haven't been able to find his birth (would be around 1882/3), or find him on 1901 census. I believe he went to sea in the Merchant Navy in Aug 1901, but I think the census was taken earlier than August? Does anyone have any ideas, or access to 1891 census? Thanks in advance, Clare

I'm afraid the only clues I have are that he was married and raised his children in Chiswick, Middx.

This is a bit of a facer. He might be on the census as George Bareham (there are tons of them). I've been through the Herbert Barehams in 1891 - any idea from marriage cert what his father did for a living? I can't find a likely birth or marriage or death for Herbert William Bareham. nell

Do either of the witnesses to the marriage seem to be related to the groom? Rose

No ideas on Herbert's occupation I'm afraid, though George/Tracey was a waiter or steward. The witnesses at the marriage were Henrietta Bull who was related to his bride, and Ernest Clinch (lovely name!) but don't know who he was.

Hi I'm not sure if that's him because he went to sea in Aug 1901 as a steward - though he may well have changed professions I suppose?

Clare I'm not convinced that any of the chaps we've found is yours! If he'd only used ALL his fancy names ALL the time, he'd be a lot easier to trace. It would help if his father's occupation was listed on the marriage cert as at least we might be able to find HIM!!!! nell

I have looked into these 1901 Barehams before and eliminated them from my enquiries! I wonder whether he was on a ship undergoing training or something like that?

I've now looked for all Guys, all Traceys, all Tracys born 1882 +/- 10 years anywhere. I've checked all surnames Bar* born in same age range in Chiswick. Too many Georges and I can't find a likely Herbert. Sorry, I've run out of ideas/inspiration. Did this chap's children have unusual names that might have been family/sibling's names? nell

The only other possibility is that you trace his details in the Merchant Navy ,which are probably somewhere in Kew - and hope they give an exact birth date and place! nell
