Moira Report 8 Nov 2019 19:10

The family name is Swailes, Thomas a coal miner no other information on him (sorry) Just that he fathered 2 children with Mary I have birth certs.
Mother Mary Elizabeth Vickers,b. 1869 Hoyland Barnsley she married Richard William Smith in 1885 Barnsley, She had a daughter Lily. Mary left Richard and Lily and moved in with Thomas Swailes she has a son Albert Edward Swailes 1893 Wakefield, he went to live with her ex husband Richard and his step sister Lily, Mary then had a daughter Ada Jane Swailes b. 1895 Wakefield, I can find nothing of the family after Ada's birth, I have Ada's birth cert.
Sorry but this is all the info I have on the family.

I have now got the Birth Cert. for Ada Jane Swailes born 19/05/1895 at 65 St Johns Terrace Normanton Wakefield
Thomas Swailes died 13/09/1895 at 65 St Johns Terrace Normanton Wakefield aged 28 years of Typhoid Fever.
Mary Swailes was present at the death and is down as widow but they were not married.
So Elizabeth would have been left with a 4 month old baby an a son of 2 years and 3 months.
we know the son went to her ex husband so where did the baby and Elizabeth go ???

This looks like Lillie birth Slightly different spelling

SMITH, LILLIE VICKERS

Moira Report 8 Nov 2019 20:00

That is Lillie, she was left by her mother at an early age, brought up by Aunt's and kept in touch with her Father, she later marries a Thomas Albert Baker, but the marriage breaks down quickly, she moves in with Charles Mapplebeck as his wife and has 14 children with him, Her father and Stepbrother Albert move in with the Mapplebeck family also, It is the Mother who on Albert's birth cert is down as Mary Swailes late Smith formerly Vickers that I can find nothing of her except that she has this other child Ada Jane born 1895 Wakefield, they seem to have vanished. sorry it is so long and drawn out

Why would her ex husband take in her son ?

Moira

Moira Report 9 Nov 2019 09:33

Firstly I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time over this.
Albert was taken in by his step sister, his father was also taken in by her, as on the 1911 census Albert has called himself Albert Smith. As for why I have no idea.
The only address for the family in Normanton Wakefield is 11 Brunswick street Normanton.
It is possible that Thomas died after Ada Jane was born, I would send for the cert. to see if it is him but other than the address that I have for them on Albert's birth cert I have nothing else to go on.
This still leaves the question as to where Mary Elizabeth Vickers, Smith or Swailes is.I have looked on the 1901 census for Mary and Ada Jane bur can find nothing. By this time Ada Jane would be 6 years old so it is possible that Mary had given her to someone else to take care of, she has done it twice in the past.

This could well be another child, she seems to have children and dispose of them, one way or another.

I have sent for the Birth Cert of Ada Jane Swailes to see if we get any more light on this woman, and another address

ArgyllGran Report 10 Nov 2019 12:01

Possibly also Emma Jane Smith's birth cert 1885.
Can't find her in 1891.
Even if she was under another surname , still can't find her.
