It's interesting looking at the image ............... all women, mainly late teens to 50's, most single but some widows and a few married, from all over England and other parts of the world ...... I saw someone from Marseille, France, another from Manilla in the Phillipines who spoke Spanish. All shown as Workers ......... Seamstresses, Laundresses, Domestic Workers etc

NOT the typical Work House listing!

It's NOT the Workhouse ........................

It's the Magdalen Asylum, Convent of the Good Shepherd, Litchfield Hall, Blackley, Manchester

and it seems to be associated with Booth Hall Infirmary, Charlestown Road, Blackley, Manchester.

Looking at the jobs listed for the women, I would guess that the Magdalen Asylum inmates provided domestic services such as laundry and such to the Infirmary

Unfortunately, Magdalen Asylums aka Magdalen Laundries have a very bad reputation for their treatment of the women who found themselves there.

In the 1909 incoming record for the Daniels family, posted by AustinQ, it says they held tickets for onward travel to St Agnes, which, from a quick Google search, seems to be in Cornwall - so another reason why maybe not them.

Yeh, I did see that ArgyllGran- sloppy of me not to include it- thanks for adding

It's a bit hard to search without further information.

Thank you everyone my grandmother was at the Manchester place you mention. My mother told me that my grandmother never put my grandfather's name on the birth certificate because he was killed in the first world war. He was coloured as was my grandmother was also. My grandmother must have moved to north view east Preston workhouse as that is where my mother was born. She is Mary louise Daniels April 21st 1916. My mother said she had a brother called Richard who was either two years older or two years younger then her.she said he got sent to America. I am now trying to trace her journey from Baltimore to here and her years between 1911 and Her death. My mother did say. Something about them being buried in Hastings but she was raised by my great grandmother so unsure. My mother would never talk to us about her life so it's like getting blood from a stone. Mum died November 9th 2000

Mary Josephine .............

The Magdalene Homes/Laundries were for "fallen girls" who were made to pay for their sins by being worked hard by the nuns.

"Fallen girls" included poor girls who had illegitimate babies ....... and thus the fact that your grandmother was in one in 1911 might mean that there is at least one child born between 1909 and 1911.

Mary josephine Report 23 Nov 2016 18:03

On my grandmother's census it says laundress and on my mother's birth certificate it says laundress . North view East Preston was a workhouse. I am presuming Grandma moved there. Will look further back for any children that Grandma had but never spoke about

Mary, I'm sorry to keep asking questions, but you said your mother was brought up by your Great Grandmother- Do you know your great Grandmother's name?

Kay????

Daniels surname has Irish roots.

Could it be Baltimore in West Cork Ireland and not USA.?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 23 Nov 2016 22:39

The 1911 image definitely says Baltimore, America.

It also says Resident, after the birthplace, which is the same for all the other non-English-born women on the list.

But maybe the person who filled in the form (Sidney Walter Wiggins) didn't know there was any other Baltimore.

No idea of great grandma's first name. When we were children we went to visit this old lady that mum said was granny cook.we assumed she was our grandmother but since she was white and grandma was black we realised this was our great grandmother. She lived in Ealing.she died about 1974. Mums dad was an American serviceman who was killed on the somme. Fami!y definitely American as my mother used to say about it. Was the youngest of the children so can remember bits and pieces. I think you all for your help and ideas which I will follow through with all of them. Am now going to look for her birth stateside. Once again thank you all.

Mary, something's not right-

If your Grandmother, Mary Josephine Daniels, was born 1886, then it is unlikely your Great Grandmother (mother of Mary J) died in 1974.

Are you sure that Mary J was black? Could it be that she was white and had a relationship with a black American serviceman.
