Find Ancestors

Hello, please could anyone help me in finding out his birth surname. He came over from Dublin with his mother Elizabeth. In the 1871 census he is living with his mother and Elijah Ford. However Elizabeth must of married Elijah or taken his name as I cannot find a marriage certificate unless she was perhaps still married to someone in Ireland. Apparently family history is that Elizabeth came over with Thomas along with other Irish families due to the potato famine and they all came over with a Father Ryan. The family have always thought they were Fords' however, I'm not so sure that there are. The family lived in Tunstall, Wolstanton. Thomas marries in 1912 a Margaret McDonald in Wolstanton, Staffordshire. . Thank you.

Rathmines is now a suburb of Dublin, abt 3km S of the city centre - I don't know what its status was in 1863.
