Huge thanks to Malyon, greyghost and Chris Ho for suggestions. I am drawn to your 2 suggestions Chris, because of the 'shoe maker' profession.
And I can easily see how the name Langley could be read as Laugley/Longley.
Do I need to invest in Certificates at this stage, or is there something more I can do to narrow these 2 down to say one.
Just thought, perhaps I will check out the 1991 census for both names. By then, my Great Grandfather Alexander would have been born.
Thanks to all :-)

(think you better look at below, from google!)

(Interestingly the boy Alexander Abrahams lived by the name of Alexander Langley (many of the Ottolangui's used the anglicanized name 'Langley') He died on 18 April 1900. Death registered in both names Abrahams & Langley. He married twice ( marriages not found) 1. Sophia Unknown 2. Mary Ann Unknown. He had 4 children 1.John born circa 1869 in Bristol (mother Sophia) 2. Elizabeth Rebecca born abt 1873, Hackney, London (mother either Sophia or Mary Ann) 3. Abraham born abt 1874 Hackney, London ( mother either Sophia or Mary Ann) 4. Albert G born abt 1881 (most likely mother Mary Ann).
Note: Birth registrations for these children not found but it is likely all the children were born with the surname Langley or Abrahams or both!)

No, but there is an Abraham on 1881, as you can see from reading links posted above, not going to be straightforward, nothing what it seems!...

Wow Chris, this is an awful lot to take in. I would never have thought that Ottolengui would translate to Langley. But I am now so overwhelmed by what I have just read, I do't know where best to start in trying to verify this. Any help on the best and first steps to be taken would be much appreciated.
I note that many of you jump around to various different sites to glean ifo.
Cheers, Trish :-)

Well Trish, for somebody like yourself just starting out, I think you might have a 'tough cookie to crumble', lol...(for that Birth Cert.)

If he is relating to Ot etc surname, then just to add there is another family in Shepherd Street, Spitalfields on 1851 and 41. Looking more on google it seems Merle Langley is in Australia, and relates to this other family, who tie in with yours. She comes up on google searches, and seems well 'knowledged' on them. (think also she links to Facebook)

Looking on below, just searching by Whitechapel using ot* 1838 - 1851 then 1852 - 1862 etc. you will see many variants of that surname...

(not sure what below would bring, maybe worth a try, one can only hope, lol)

google is a good port of call for family history, you never know what might turn up, have a look round, and see what you think.
