Rambina Report 15 Aug 2015 10:00

I am trying to find the family of James Glendenning, born 1887, died 1959, Co. Durham. I have him at 24 in the 1911 census and think I have found him at 14 in the 1901 census, but cannot find the family in any other census. I know he had two brothers called Robert and Joseph, Robert dying in a mining accident at the age of 16. I know there were other sibling, but not aware of their names. There was also a story that his brothers had a business, Glendenning Ales and this later had something to do with Victoria Wines, although there was also a story that they sold to Vaux Breweries. They seem to have dropped off the end of the world, this has been driving me crazy, on and off, can anyone shed any light on this. Thanks in advance.

Yes Claire - I was just looking into that but if the 1911 is correct then it does look like the family in 1891 which includes his sister Charlotte wo married John William Golphin ???

I will look further for info on Robert and Joseph to connect....................

Sheila -

Just so we're sure we're not looking at the wrong family - are you just assuming that the family you found in the census is the right one, or do you have proved info such as James's YOB, parents' names, etc?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 15 Aug 2015 10:39

There's this death of a Robert aged 16 - could this be him? Age-wise, it would fit with the 1901 census posted by Claire

Deaths Jun 1916 (>99%)
Glendenning Robert 16 Lanchester 10a 373

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 15 Aug 2015 10:48

The age is different on this 1911, but the names match:

1911 England, Wales & Scotland Census
26 Blackett St Sacriston Durham, Witton Gilbert, Durham, England
Household Members
First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Occupation Age Birth year Birth place

Joseph Glendenning Head Married Male Coal Hewer 42 1869 Burn Hope Durham
Dorthory Jane Glendenning Wife Married Female - 40 1871 Waldridge Fell Durham
James Glendenning Son Single Male Miner Putter Below 19 1892 Waldridge Fell Durham
Robert Glendenning - - Male Belt Lad Screens Above 14 1897 Sacriston Durham
Joseph Glendenning Son - Male School Boy 6 1905 Sacriston Durham

It depends whether Sheila knows the birth year for definite, or if it's based on that 1959 death - which has a middle name of Robert.

Can't see a birth record for a James A (as per 1891 census I posted). Must be a mistake by the clerk

But there's this, which would tie in with 1891 re year and place of birth, and with the 1959 death:

Births Mar 1887 (>99%)
GLENDINNING James Robert Chester le S. 10a 466

Thank you so much for your replies, I was not expecting to hear from anyone so soon and with so much info. I am not 100% sure that I had the right family to begin with, it was just that the mother and father's names appeared to be correct and the age of James was correct, also as there was an Ale business within the family, it looked like, the father being a manager of a public house, could fit in. The 24 year old James I found in the 1901 census and he was on his own, possible his wife Elizabeth was elsewhere. He was a coal miner. His father could also have been a coal miner. James could also have had the names John and Robert. Clair, you have the right James's death, but there are some there that can not be the right families.
I will try and process further all of the info you have all sent, as there is quite a bit to take in.

Rambina Report 15 Aug 2015 12:28

Sorry, made a mistake in my last reply.

24 year old James is in the 1911 census not the 1901 census, this, I am sure, is the right James, he is living in Annfield Plain, on going back from there I cannot be sure of anything anymore.

The only Glendenning death on the Durham Mining Museum site who was 16 was a John Glendenning who was killed in 1909. His father John was also killed in the same mine explosion in 1909.

You have got the one Claire, that's what I have.

To ArgyllGran - Because of your info. regarding the death of Robert, age 16, I have found the family in the 1911 census, they are at East Pontop, this is the right family as when James got married this is the address for his father on the marriage certificate. Now I have to try and work backover.

Many, many thanks to you all
