probably a stupid question but what is a sponsor?

Not stupid at all...a Sponsor/"Godparent" depends on which term the Priest used.

There is a large gap in the Church Reg.which is why I could not look at the years after Sara 1908) and before Joannes (1918)

1918 baptism for Joannes found by Eringobragh is in the same place as the others posted - the RC Cathedral for Salford and the forenames have been recorded in Latin.

Cathedral Church of St John the Evangelist, Salford, Lancs.
Joannes Hart - filius Georgii Henrici Hart & Mariae Joannae (formerly McQuarry)

Written in Latin Joannes will be John, the fillies meaning son and will be this birth

thank you for the source, figured a few may have died - 11 children in total. Still a mystery about where Mary hart (nMcquarry) was at the time of the 1911 census, doesn't help that her mother in law has the same name - mary jane hart.
