That Chelsea Pensioner record posted by Yvonne on page 1 is definitely him - if anyone has a sub or credits for FMP, perhaps they could look at the image? Perhaps it would give a date for the record?:

re-training???????????

Ken

Ken Report 24 Jun 2015 19:43

Hi all, I also put RR Markham to one side because I also had the impression that he wasn't very capable of reading & writing, to suddenly become a clerk.
Because of his heart disability I really expected him to be home around Camberwell
were his family could help him.
Heart attacks/Strokes have been bumping of the male Markhams for the last 150years and still are to date.
I have copies and certificates of everything mentioned above.
Just to confuse me Henry & Elizabeth named their next son Henry TAYLOR, at least they had him baptized at St Johns ,Hoxton,in 1856 gave an address of Curtain Rd which was a most undesirable place to live, typical east end slum. Off searching again how does Taylor fit in ,a relatives maiden name, or just fancied it. ???

I note that R. R. Markham is said to have the occupation of Clerk

yet Ken says that he always signs his army papers with a X ....... indicating that he could not write.

Is it really possible that someone who is unable to sign his name from apparently about 1870 and 1872, and is discharged with a "disability will affect his ability to support himself" would be able to gain employment as a clerk in 1881?

Argllgran, All info you have is correct William in 1881 is my g/grandfather his son Richard was my grandfather
the Richard with a son Albert was a "Barrett" that was mentioned above which I followed up as stated above.
All the siblings stayed in s/London area and all seemed to name their boys William,John or Richard
I have done some searching in the irish records but nothing looked good
I take your point about dates I always search a wide margin, Richard possibly never knew his exact birth date, he signs his army papers with a cross (his mark)
Thanks for your input, will keep searching

I don't see a Richard Markham with son Albert in 1881. (The nearest is an R Markham born c1843 in Buckinghamshire.)

Re age - in your OP you say he was born 1851.
At 1861 census he was born 1853, at enlistment born 1851, at discharge born approx. Dec 1851.

Any or all of those options might be wrong.

I don't see his mother or siblings after 1871, for that matter.

Perhaps he stayed in Ireland, or died there.

is the age way out??

so much death information is "hearsay" ............ and age is one of the worst ones for being wrong

Ken

Ken Report 23 Jun 2015 20:12

Have followed that one up in 1881census he looks to be married with a son Albert
so not my trail, there is a huge family of Barretts in the Newington/Walworth area
I have tracked most of them that have coinciding names and birth years
I have been searching for births and baptisms of this lot for the last ten years
and have got nowhere!!

Thanks Ken
Just found a death ref for Manchester cemetery for Richard Markham 1884 but no details, but then lower on page its repeated with age , NOT Mine wrong age.

What was Elizabeth's father's name on her marriage cert ?

Ken

Ken Report 23 Jun 2015 19:13

Exactly correct, Your long shot Mike.,
I have never found a birth or baptism for the first 3 boys either Barrett or Markham ( ie William,John, Richard ) another son Henry baptized Shoreditch just after their marriage, the last son Charles was registerd in 1862.
When Henry & Elizabeth Barrett married neither stated they were widowed or formerly on record, just says of full age. William is my g/grandfather.
On Richards army enlistment papers he doesn't state a middle initial, after 1872 he just disappears, the regiment would have possibly shipped him back to Lancs from Dublin.
Thanks Ken M
