I wonder if anyone can help me. I'm trying to find my paternal grandmother Florence Goddard. Florence(born may 1900) married my Grandfather, John Orritt in 1934 in Southport and mentions her fathers name as William Goddard, deceased. I have no idea where Florence came from.
I have always been told that Florence was a twin and that when she was about 12 her Mother, Father and twin sister went out in a pony and trap. Unfortunately the trap overturned, killing all three, leaving Florence an orphan. She was then brought up by someone else. She suffered from epilepsy brought on apparently by the tragedy.
I wondered if possibly Florence had been christened a different surname and brought up by someone (william) with the surname Goddard after the incident, or maybe it is just a story to cover up the fact that my grandmother became epilectic at the age of 12!!! or that something more sinister happened in the family.
If anyone can help I would be most grateful
Sue Stacey

Hi everyone and thanks Ann for your messages.
Williams occupation was "commercial traveller" according to Florences marriage certificate. I have a gut feeling that Florence was adopted possibly by William, which is why we can't find her birth record. I've contacted the Goddard Association of Europe also and they can't find her so she's definitely a mystery

Hi Jaqueline
Florence was 34 when she married. The marriage was on the 1st September 1934. She was a domestic servant. The odd thing is that she is classed as Florence Rosaline (not Rosalind) on the certificate.

The spelling is probably down to the way the registrar interpreted what he heard

Susan this may be of interest to you. Names match but relationship is that of husband/wife and not father/daughter. Info comes from the National Archives which is always a good source of info as well.
