In 1847 he lied about his age and joined the merchant Navy- he gave his date of birth as 7th Aug 1830.

Thanks for the assistance in locating the modern day relatives of George Jebb Mathews and his son Harold Schuyler.I have sent them a message to make contact with me if they wish.Sadly the oldest relative passed away this year aged 90.I Should have asked for help sooner. A special thanks to Helen who I hope didn't soil her dinner

I just wish we knew what happened to Harold's brother, Roderic Malcolm Chalmers Mathews, after he joined the merchant navy. There could be many more descendants from his line.

ps. I did find a small newspaper article regarding Roderic's prison sentence:

Roderic Malcolm Chalmers Mathews, a boy twelve years old, pleaded guilty to stealing a quantity of books and other articles, the property of Mr Birch, bookseller. He was sentenced to one months imprisonment.

Hello again Helen.The Malcolm Roderic Mathews who passed away last year is most likely to be descended from Harold Schuyler Mathews who arrived in USA about 1850.The funeral parlour said he had three sons. One of them is a doctor and I have e-mailed his practice but had no reply.There was no address for the other two.I tried again to find Roderic b.1833 but he seems to have escaped the system.He may have been deported to Australia for theft!!! Perhaps somebody out there knows where he went.
