Army records are on Ancestry:

British Army WWI Pension Records 1914-1920 about Charles Harry Grey
Name: Charles Harry Grey
Document Year: 1919
Regimental Number: 290302
Regiment Name: Royal Garrison Artillery
Number of Images: 13

I think the name on the record is Charles HENRY but they are in very bad condition. - He is married to Alice though.

These are obviously some of the births for this couple:

Births Mar 1912
Gray Arthur D Drinkall Glanford B. 7a 1339

Births Mar 1914
Grey Carita Drinkall Glanford B 7a 1299
Births Dec 1915
GREY Elsie Drinkall Glanford B. 7a 1129
Births Dec 1919
Grey Freda Drinkall Glanford B. 7a 1338

The third one on the list in his records could well be Arthur (+ a second name)

The 4th IS Carita

The last one 'could be an Elsie and the year 'could' say 1915 but it really is impossible to be sure as the writing is VERY bad!

That leaves little Freda who may of course have died ??

Dea x

EDIT - Freda didn't die - she wasn't born yet !! - The card with the children listed in his records was completed on 1st May, 1919 and she wasn't born until later in that year !

Sorry It has taken me a while to get back to you all but my Mum just popped round out of the blue.

Thank you Chris and Dea for all your help.

There seems to be a problem here because I have his parents as John Grey and Rose . I will have to look into this to make sure I don't go down the wrong line here. This could be tricky.

The name Collingsworth Collingswood. Could it be Hollingsworth rings a bell So I will have to investigate this further.

Thank you so much for all your help

I must be going mad

I am sure PricklyHolly added a marriage date for these two and I put on a reply saying thankyou and that I must send for the marriage cert to make sure ihad the correct father for Charles Henry Gray but this seems to have vanished.

The army records Dea found are looking good. If I have got the parents correct then the other army records are wrong and so are the baptism records. So it is looking like I need to get the birth cert aswell.

All the best and thank you for your help

Jane,

I presume that one of the children of Charles Henry is a direct ancestor of yours?

Can you tell us which one and how you have worked your way back to a Charles Henry please?

Dea x

Jane

Jane Report 23 Feb 2014 11:45

Thanks PricklyHolly

I think I will have to send for this marriage cert just to make sure I have his father correct. I hope The two baptisms that Chris found I hope are wrong or I have made a mistake somewhere.

The Army records Dea has found for him look promising. Its quite confusing. The name Collingwood and Rebecca Hicks rings a bell but as of yet i can't find them in my records.

Jane

Jane Report 23 Feb 2014 12:00

Hi Dea

He is not a direct relative of mine. I know I am breaking the rules but I am coming down this branch line not going back. If that makes sense.

My relative is John gray 1777-1850 and Jane Tweed 1775-1850 they had a son called George Gray b 1811 -1870 who married Ann Hollingsworth 1811/c1887
They had a son Frank 1836-1910 who married Alice Curdocck1834-1878
They had a son John gray 1862-1936 who married Rose Kendall 1866-1926
Charles Henry is their son.

So I think It is probably best to leave it here until I get the certs I need to proove he's mine one way or another and then go from there.

Thank you so much for your help

Jane.

Jane, I always think that it is better to work backwards from what you already know but it looks like you are now trying to 'join up the dots inbetween' ?? :-D

Have to cook lunch just now but I will take a look after that to see if I can help ?

As you say, you really need to buy that marriage cert to see if his father was John - I can't see any other way to prove that you are on the right track.
