Thinking about this, have you had contact or traced any of the other siblings to your mum & their descendants - they may know more if they stayed in touch with the rest of the family?

If you can connect to any of them it may save on certificates, but otherwise I'd get her birth cert first and take it from there, but post up the details if you do. Then we can look for deaths.

No contact as yet, did find her brothers death and have cert which has the name of his son on it but am so worried about distressing people i have held off contacting him. Do you think it would be ok to write to him giving my address and then leave it up to him x also found her sisters nephew on here but he seems reluctant to reply xx skeletons perhaps x

It's difficult to say, but it's not like you are a skeleon in the cupboard - you're just trying to get some family history relating to your mum's family.

If you are sure you have the right cousin I don't think a letter would cause too much distress it's not like you are too closly related for it to cause problems. - enclose a self addressed envelope or contact details - then like you say it would be up to him.
